      Old school blues and ragtime

This album "The Legendary Recordings" is an excellent compilation album that spans a two year period at the height of banjo player Gus Cannon's career. Gus Cannon like so many artists from the Mississipi Delta scene was born on and grew up on a plantation, by the time he got round to recording his music - he was already an accomplished musician with years of experience behind him, having initially made his own banjo out of raccoon skin and a frying pan! Influenced by budding blues artists of the time, his band was the "Jug Stompers", if you've never heard a jug band before then this is a good album to start with and if you have, then it's a must for the collection.

The combination of Gus Cannon's banjo and voice backed up with Ashley Thompson on guitar and the awesome Noah Lewis on harmonica is a great mix, any one of these musicians would stand out on their own but to have them not only together but then to throw in jug playing on the top - giving it an insane fuzzing whirling noise, is a pretty crazy sound. Certain tracks on this album have Gus Cannon backed up by legendary guitarist Blind Blake as well.

The lyrics are full with strong blues lines but the music itself is a mixture of ragtime, jazz, blues completed with noises from non-conventional musical instruments. An album that is definitely worth checking out.
