This is another fantastic soundtrack by Howard Shore. I thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack to the first LOTR film and bought this CD before the Two Towers actually came out in the cinema. I wasn't disappointed! However, Gollum's song (performed by Emiliana Torrini) was rather confusing until I saw the film (and still then). Images of an immense stretch of rugged snow-capped peaks flit into mind as distant strings usher you into the fantasy world of Middle-earth. The strings gradually rise in a crescendo, then a pounding orchestral piece sweeps us into the heart of the action – where Gandalf faces off the Balrog in the deep mines of Moria. The ensuing choral rendition lends resounding dramatic impact to the dizzying plunge through the chasm. All in all, an impressive opening to this soundtrack.
