During the recent Middle-East crisis, it was said by a senior Pentagon spokesman, (in that hideously ugly American soundbite manner), that Belgium was France and Germany's 'Mini-Me'. Whilst this crass statement can only really be excused on the grounds that it is a better cultural reference point than the one used by Donald Rumsfeld at the War's outset (when he said it was 'Hammertime', I half expected him to come out from behind the podium wearing baggy pants and start to bodypop), it does go to show that Belgium doesn't really have much of a cultural identity of its own.
