Up until about a month ago, you may have asked,”His name is…what? His name is…who?”. But by now, unless you have been locked away in a closet, you have heard Eminem’s latest single, “My Name Is”. Lately, it seems like everyone knows his name. People in the industry have dubbed the sudden popularity “the Eminem phenominon”, and 1999 is said to go down as “the year of the white rapper”. For most new fans, Eminem (a.k.a. Slim Shady, and born into the world as Marshall Mathers) seemed to appear out of nowhere … Dr. Dre’s newest prodigy with a catchy single and a hilarious number one video. In recent press, he has been called a “squirrelly rapper” (Vibe, Feb. 99), “a pissy 24-year-old white welfare kid” (Spin, Feb.99), and a “misogynist rap snot” (Vibe, April 99). These descriptions seem more to refer to his self-named alter ego, “Slim Shady”, the dark, sarcastic, unforgiving side of Eminem’s personality.
