Advantages: Amazing songs, great melodies, great singing
Disadvantages: First track isn't the best
The self-titled debut album by The Mary Onettes is one of the best pieces of indie music, I've come across lately. Released in 2007, I was shocked to discover this band were Swedish as this is the way UK indie music should sound rather than the pointless pop groups of today.
I have to say the first track on the album sounded a little bit Coldplayish and I thought "oh no, it's another dull band" but the second track picked up and the album was great from then on.The Mary Onettes sound borrows largely from decent 80s bands and some of the 90s brit pop bands at their best but despite their similarities still sound surprisingly refreshing. The most notable of the similarities is a Peter Hook like(Joy Division, New Order, Monaco) bass line. Likewise on "Void", the vocals are very Ian Curtisy.
The band have a talent for expressing sad lyrics with cheerful tunes without sounding like the awful Lighthouse Family. The guitars, drums and keyboards are played to perfection and the vocals are ideal, there's not a chance in hell you'd guess the vocalist was Swedish though.
This album has so many good songs, you don't want it to end but I think the most enjoyable for me have to be "The Companion" and "Still", this is great music and I think it should appeal to most people as it is just outstandingly brilliant pop music. Why they aren't well known is beyond me.

- 06/06/09 Interesting review - will have to check them out. (Incidentally, the Lighthouse Family's songwriter is now actually in an 80s-ish indie band called the Orange Lights. I saw them support Shack a couple of years ago, and believe it or not, they were quite good!) |
