**Deborah Cox**
Many of you may not have heard of Deborah Cox so here's a little introduction to this singer. She was born in Toronto, Canada on 13th July 1974 to Afro-Guyanese parents. She has worked with some greats of the female R&B scene, most notably on Whitney Houston's Same Script, different cast. Cox began her singing career as a backing singer for Celine Dion and then began to write her own stuff. In 1995 she signed to legendary record Label Arista Records and then She released her self titled debut album.
She is one of the most interesting artists in the R&B genre as one moment she is doing a soul ballad and the next she is doing a full on dance track, she is very hard to pin down and that's one thing I like about her music. All the best artists have a great variety to their music. Her debut produced the singles "Sentimental", "Who Do U Love", "Where Do We Go From Here" and "The Sound Of My Tears"
**Morning After**
This is her third album and first for J-Records, It was released on 5th November 2002 and features the singles "Absolutely Not (Chanel Mix)", "Up & Down (In & Out)", "Mr. Lonely", "Play Your Part" and "The Morning After". Here is my run down of her album The Morning After.
**Album Review**
1. Up and down (in and out)
This is one of the dance tracks and has a great beat and the percussive feel of this track makes you shake your body along to the beat and melody. A decent dance track.
2. 2 Good 2 Be True
This track shows off her rich vocals to great effect. An uptempo track that flows really well and is one of the best uptempo tracks on The Morning After.
3. Play Your Part
This is a great ballad that has an uptempo feel. This track has a great message about the passive-aggressive relationship and brings it into focus. Her voice sounds amazing in this track.
4. Like I Did
A funky uptempo track which shows off the Whitney like vocals from Deborah Cox, This track is one of the most flowing uptempo tracks you are likely to hear. A very catchy track.
5. Hurt so much
This is a lovely ballad which starts with some soft keys and then develops through the vocals. In this track she showcases why she has been compared to Whitney Houston vocally. A superbly sung ballad which is one of her best.
6. Just a Dance
One of the more funky tracks on the album, Although not the best track on The Morning After it is still a very decent track which has a very catchy feel.
7. The Morning After
From the way this track starts off you know it's special. A nice piano intro is joined by soulful guitars and then the song is in full flow with her exceptional vocal on the track. One of the most beautiful songs in the genre this century.
8. Givin it Up
This is a catchy uptempo track with some nice smooth backing vocals. As do the rest of the uptempo tracks this also has a very flowing feel to it.
9. Up and Down (In and Out)(Allstar Remix) (Featuring Jadakiss)
This is a remix of the first track and has enough about it to seperate it from the original version, she sounds a little like Whitney Houston in this track too.
10. Oh My Gosh
Another uptempo track which showcases the similarity between Deborah Cox and Whitney Houston vocally. She's not quite as good as Whitney but certainly gives her a run for her money.
11. Starting With You
This is the least instant ballad on the album but it has a very nice feel and after a few listens you will get to really like it. A nice ballad once you really listen without comparing it to the other ballads.
12. Mr.Lonely
This is a very catchy dance track but again she doesnt show enough of her vocal ability that she showcases on her ballads. A nice enough track however.
13. Absolutely not
This is a catchy full on dance track with some great hooks but you don't get the real vocal ability that she has. She seems to restrained vocally. A decent track but it doesnt show enough of the vocal ability she has.
**Overall**
So there is my review of the third album from Deborah Cox, A very good effort indeed and having a voice that is similar in parts to Whitney Houston can't be bad at all can it?? If you like your R&B then The Morning After is One to look out for on amazon or ebay.
