Temperamental - Everything But The Girl

Premium Review The ninth album from Everything But The Girl (975 words)
by micksheff - written on 12/04/08 (Very useful, 113 readings)
Rating:

Sometimes I can hardly believe that it is almost nine years since Everything But the Girl released their last and ninth studio album, Temperamental, but since this album was released in the September of 1999 then this is a fact. The release of a re-mixed version of Missing in 1996 by Todd Terry had ensured that Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, the duo that comprise the band, embarked on a much more dance orientated album with the predecessor to Temperamental, Walking Wounded. It is therefore not surprising that Temperamental takes this experimentation a step further. The album contains 10 tracks as below: Five Fathoms The Low Tide Of The Night Blame Hatfield 1980 ...

Worldwide - Everything But The Girl

Premium Review The sixth album from Everything But The Girl (1018 words)
by micksheff - written on 02/02/08 (Very useful, 114 readings)
Rating:

British duo Everything But the Girl had formed in 1982, whilst both of the members Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn had been studying at Hull University. Since their debut release, a jazz influenced version of Cole Porter s "Night and Day" later that same year there have been many different labels attached to the band but their experiments with all musical styles, including country and western, acoustic and later house and dance would ensure that they would never be easy to categorise, although the one the that has always been consistent is Tracey s rich, smooth vocals, that would later be likened to other female singers that would emerge like Sade and Dido. With five ...

Idlewild - Everything But The Girl

Premium Review Their Best (283 words)
by bishops - written on 09/10/00 (Very useful, 102 readings)

at university to start their long-running musical and domestic partnership. Idlewild, their fourth studio album, is my personal favourite of all their albums. Over the years, having played Everything they've ever done to death, I've grown to love practically all their music, even stuff that didn't grab me first time round, but my most enduring relationship is with this one. I've long held that Tracey Thorn is the best female vocalist to come out of this country since Dusty Springfield, and she is in stunning voice on this album. The lyrical content is spot-on (a particular strength of EBTG), and unusually one of (maybe even THE) killer tracks has a ...

Good to relax to. Celine Dion is a great singer with such passion and love in her voice Not a good album to listen to if you want something a bit more up beat.

Pop - Dance Pop - 1996

Pop - Dance Pop - 2002

The opening and ending songs are brilliant Very samey, not a particularly surprising album

Beautiful lyrics, music, amazing vocals, very passionate No lyrics in the cover booklet

Post To Wire - Richmond Fontaine
Well-crafted songs telling poignant tales; great musicianship; evocative pedal steel None to speak of

Pentecost III - Anathema
Unparalleled gloom, and a long-awaited resurrection of these vital releases. May lead to suicidal tendencies or manic depression. Okay for pregnant women though.

If Emotions Still Burn - Ablaze My Sorrow
A pleasant surplus of lead guitar melodies balanced out with some angry death metal. Overly repetitive, and too similar to Dark Tranquillity and others to truly stand out.

Fur And Gold - Bat For Lashes
A completely unique experience, Natasha Khan is a talented lady! Might be too avant-garde for many people.

Every Second Counts - Plain White T's
Hey There Delilah is a classic song Could be longer

Drastic Fantastic - KT Tunstall
Even better than the first album Not so keen on the cover art

Dominate - Adagio
Competent and enjoyable progressive power metal. A couple of terrible songs, and far too derivative of Symphony X.

Awkward Annie - Kate Rusby
an excellent album, lots of lovely songs that one track with the dodgy harmonies

When The Kite String Pops - Acid Bath
Innovatively harsh-sounding, and effectively violent. Too aggressive at cost to creativity, and not enough focus on pure doom metal.

Mi Sueno - Ibrahim Ferrer
Ferrer's beautiful voice, simple arrangements None at all
