Sometimes I can hardly believe that it is almost nine years since Everything But the Girl released their last and ninth studio album, Temperamental, but since this album was released in the September of 1999 then this is a fact. The release of a re-mixed version of Missing in 1996 by Todd Terry had ensured that Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, the duo that comprise the band, embarked on a much more dance orientated album with the predecessor to Temperamental, Walking Wounded. British duo Everything But the Girl had formed in 1982, whilst both of the members Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn had been studying at Hull University. Since their debut release, a jazz influenced version of Cole Porter s "Night and Day" later that same year there have been many different labels attached to the band but their experiments with all musical styles, including country and western, acoustic and later house and dance would ensure that they would never be easy to categorise, although the one the that has always been consistent is Tracey s rich, smooth vocals, that would later be likened to other female singers that would emerge like Sade and Dido. Idlewild - Everything But The Girl

at university to start their long-running musical and domestic partnership. Idlewild, their fourth studio album, is my personal favourite of all their albums. Over the years, having played Everything they've ever done to death, I've grown to love practically all their music, even stuff that didn't grab me first time round, but my most enduring relationship is with this one. I've long held that Tracey Thorn is the best female vocalist to come out of this country since Dusty Springfield, and she is in stunning voice on this album.
