The Sky Moves Sideways is, simply put one of the most essential pieces of experimental and progressive rock ever written . By far the highlight of the album is the epic title track, divided into two phases of nearly twenty minutes. Phase one is lyrically and vocally perfect, and the ambient textures and emotion portray by the piece is second to none. The Moon Touches Your Shoulder continues the unique atmosphere, which is quite unlike anything I had ever heard before. The closing The Sky Moves Sideways Phase 2 is just as impressive as the first phase, making use of a drifting ambient intro before screeching guitar work from S Wilson, underlining his endless skill and talent. Richard Barbieri is again impressive during phase 2, with his synth layers and drifting backdrops coming to the foreground in what is a highly detailed and complex sound. As if not already impressive enough, the Snapper digipak re-issue comes with a bonus disk of alternate tracks which is an album in itself. The alternate cut of the title track The Sky Moves Sideways is a fascinating alternate perspective, and the two versions of Moonloop are both a highly valuable addition to what is a desert island, one of a kind release.
