I've got a mate who regularly trots out his theory that if The Beatles were still going today they'd sound like the Chemical Brothers. His argument is that they were in a state of constant evolution, and not all of it sat too comfortably with their fans. "The Soft Parade" was the Doors' first - and last - step on the experimental ladder brought into the popular musical world by Lennon & McCartney. It finds them at their rambling best, toying with the soundscapes that came to influence the prog rock of the early 1970s, and knocking out a few decent tracks at the same time. This was the Doors fourth album and marks a radical change in the Doors musical direction when compared to the previous three albums. In the three albums before Ray Manzarek’s keyboards make up the dominant sound of the band, in this album a horn section makes up most of the main music. The songs are generally weaker as well, although there are some exceptions with “Wishful Sinful” which is a tender ballad and also the track “Soft Parade” which is a thumping track.
