Advantages: Girly dance tunes
Disadvantages: Weak cover versions
This was released as a Greatest Hits album and it is padded out with a few cover versions as well, it is a pretty good album if you like the manufactured pop band style of music, I much prefer dance music like the Chemical Brothers but this music has its place and having seen them perform live I can appreciate the fact that they can sing and dance and certainly put on a decent show for an audience.
The album kicks off with the song that was a hit when they were created as part of one of those reality shows, Sound of the Underground has a driving almost monotone delivery to it and is a strong track to start with. After that it is a number of hits that are to follow with Love Machine a sign of the stand in a line and do the dance move style of music that they produce, personally I prefer the Arctic Monkies cover that was done on the Radio 1 live lounge album.
Biology is another hit and one of my favourite Girls Aloud tracks and there is also Long Hot Summer and Whole Lotta History on the album which are decent tracks.
I'm less convinced with the cover versions they attempt, Stand by You which is a cover of the Pretenders song is awful, Chrissie Hynd has a distinctive voice that holds this song togther and non of the Girls Aloud band can match this so you are left with a pretty dire dirge of a song. The Pointers Sisters song Jump adapts to their style a little better as does an inane track from Tiffany but both were better live than a studion version on the album.
For fans this is a good album and bringing out a Greatest Hits tends to suggest that solo careers and obscurity beckon although at least one will make a mint when they divorce their cheating footballer husband.
Summary: Greatest Hits album.
