Advantages: Cornered the market

Disadvantages: Not a lot of variation

Whether you like them or not, there is no denying that Girls Aloud are consistently at the top of their field, and despite the stigma attached to them of being a manufactured girl band, they have developed and are continuing to develop as musicians as well as just performers.

The Sound Of Girls Aloud was released late in 2006, and is a 'Best Of' album of sorts, surprising in a sense as the band was only formed in 2002. Four years to already have enough hits to make a 'Best Of' album is impressive, and shows how successful they have been.

The tracks:

Sound Of The Underground
Love Machine
Biology
No Good Advice
I'll Stand By You
Jump
The Show
See The Day
Wake Me Up
Life Got Cold
Something Kinda Ooooh
Whole Lotta History
Long Hot Summer
Money
I Think We're Alone Now

I idly went by following the selection of the band members as they won Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, and if you had asked me how many hits they'd had, I would have said maybe 4 or 5, off the top of my head. This album shows how many hits they accrued in a 4 year period - a phenomenal achivement, and every single track is very catchy.

The 5 girls of the band don't profess to be extremely musically gifted in terms of song writing or lyricists, but what they do well is combine as a vocal group and engage an audience. Their range of talent is also impressive, with all of them being able to sing different genres of music, and while this album is mainly pop music, there are some faster, more fun songs, as well as heavier, more serious ones, and a couple of ballady tracks, too. Life Got Cold shows a pensive and harmonious side to thier voices, as does thier cover of the Cranberries' I'll Stand BY You.

Sound Of The Underground was the song penned for them as they won Popstars, and it was their first hit. The upbeat and catchy nature of it is typical of a lot of songs on this album. The only crticism I may have is that a lot of their hits on here are very similar to each other in many ways, but this is also worthy of praise as they have clearly targeted the right audience with this genre of music, and it has worked.

I am not the biggest Girls Aloud fan, and this is not necessarily an album I would choose to listen to over something else, but I can appreciate the musical quality and commercial appeal this album has to offer, and am impressed by the speed of the their first 'Best Of' album. There aren't many successful girl bands around at the moment, with perhaps them and the Sugababes cornering the market between them at the moment, and as long as they continue to do as they have here, success will surely follow.

The Sound of Girls Aloud is readily available on the internet, and can be picked up for £5 from Tesco.

Summary: Good Best Of album
