Expatriate Mexicans the Chasm continue to define their sound as a more music-based Bal-Sagoth, their epic musical passages forming narratives in place of needlessly complex lyrics. A little more self-consciously 'epic' than before, this album suffers slightly as a result, with songs such as the multi-part 'The Eclipse: Monument to the Empire' sounding essentially no different to their less pompously titled neighbours. The Chasm are still masters of their craft, mixing flawless and creative musicianship with satisfying tempo changes, but here their myriad influences from classic death metal and eighties heavy metal start to show through the cracks, frequently ...
