... quite far up the scale the instruments create both harmony and melody. I think this song is brilliant – I can’t really say I enjoyed other versions but this one is catchy, upbeat, and has fantastic vocal accompaniment. The sax takes on a life of its own ending the track in a smoky tune mimicking Chuck’s vocal. ‘What Are You Doing New Years Eve?’ is a very sexy song with a slow tempo and sax intro. The Spirit of Christmas is combined in a nine track album in a way I’ve never heard before. When I think of Chuck Brown I imagine a Barry White type character of the Go-Go world branching out here from Go-go to Jazz, Blues and Gospel in one album. With his extremely sexy deep and smoky voice Christmas has been given a new life. Chuck is joined by Eva Cassidy (who sadly passed away in 1996) on two tracks but on hearing her on tape years before, believed that she was a black woman.
