Miley Cyrus has always been someone I sometimes love or sometimes hate. When I read about her , and see her interviews in magazines ,watch her Hannah Montana shows and hear a music , I like her. But then I have seen her on television shows such as the Jonathon Ross show and she comes across as really cocky and 'in-yer-face'. However , the last couple of months , I have become quite a fan of Miley Cyrus and so decided to buy her latest album ; The Time Of Our Lives.
This album is the third one from Miley Cyrus and was released in the United Kingdom on November 9th 2009. The album which comes under the pop-rock , dance-pop , synth-pop and country pop genres and features just eight tracks. The CD is available to buy from Amazon for a price of £5.99 which I think is great value considering it's fairly recent.
When I first picked up a copy of this album , I was shocked at how short it was. Because I had already heard three of the tracks (The Climb , Party In The USA , and When I Look At You) before as they are singles , I was slightly disappointed that there was therefore only five more songs that I hadn't heard. However , having actually thought about it , I have realised that perhaps Miley didn't get the usual twelve (ish!) tracks that other artisits have on their albums , because she simply didn't use fillers!! Despite my first impressions of the album being disappointed with it's length , when I heard the actual songs , I was blown away! It's fantastic!
I have always really liked Miley's music , and also Miley as an artist , because she is so musically talented. It's obvious that since her last album , Miley has matured a lot more musically , and I especially like her new 'rockier' sound. I love Miley's voice too ; it's unique yet really powerful and really suits both ballads and the more rockier tunes. It's also great to see her what her style of music is really like , and not see the 'Disney' version of her for a change.
Every song is brilliant in my opinion , however the two which really really stand out (they all stand out but these are the ones) the most for me are 'When I LOOK At You' (a beautiful ballad that really shows off her voice) and ' The Climb' (as again , it really shows off her voice and seems to have a personal meaning to it). There are a lot of catchy songs on here ; ones which will suit every mood. I find once you get one of these songs in your head , it's hard to get rid of it (that's a good thing). It's definetaly one I have playing in my car on a regular basis.
I really enjoyed listening to the lyrics as there is a lot to relate to and makes you think even one of the World's biggest star has the same kind of problems. I also like that Miley's written a few of the songs herself , as they're personal to her and add a special touch , rather than if someone else had just written the songs and given them to her just to sing! She really is a superstar ; genuinely talented , it's hard to believe that she's achieved so much yet it still only seventeen!
If you like Hannah Montana , and Miley Cyrus' other albums , then you are sure to love this!
Thanks for reading!
Im not a big fan of Miley Cyrus but decided to give it a listen after purchasing her 3rd studio album 'Can't Be Tamed', so I found myself buying her 2nd studio album 'The Time Of Our Lives' not long after and I must say that I was impressed with most of it.
The opening track 'Kicking And Screaming' is something I would never listen to and the one song off the album I find myself skipping. The song kicks off with heavy guitars and an instant rock feel which is something I personally hate. Saying that, her vocals are well fitted to this song.
The second track and single from the album, 'Party In The U.S.A.' is a well put together dance/pop song which is a guilty pleasure of mine. Her vocals are fantastic, lyrically the song is about Miley moving to Hollywood to pusure her dreams and her realisation of the differences from her country up bringing.
The third track 'When I Look At You' is an emotional ballad, the lyrics are amazing and her vocals smash this song. Fantastic song!
Forth track 'Time Of Our Lives' is a promising pop hit with a crafty bass to it. Once again, her vocals smash it.
The fifth track 'Talk Is Cheap' sounds like something from her debut album 'Breakout' which had a pop/rock feel. Not a bad song but still not as good as most of the previous tracks.
Sixth track 'Obsessed' contains brilliant lyrics and vocals and the background music really makes this song.
The seventh track 'Before The Storm' is a live duet with Jonas Brothers, a band who I have no interest in. However, they fit in very well witg this song and like Miley deliver fantastic live vocals. I'm glad they put the live version on the record and not whatever studio version they recorded.
The eighth track is the cherry on top for this album 'The Climb' is a beautiful ballad and a lyrical genius, everyone could relate to this amazing song. Its emotional, catchy and just all round perfection.
Today I am going to be reviewing Miley Cyrus' album The time of our lives which was released in 2009. This was not an album that I initially set out to buy but it was on offer and I actually quite liked some of the earlier stuff that Miley had released so thought why not?
WHO IS MILEY CYRUS?
If any body does not know who Miley Cyrus is then they must have been living under a rock for the past 4-5 years. She has been everywhere! On the telly, on the radio, on toys, on the big screen and even on sweets. She is a Disney phenomenon.
Her rise to success began when Disney masterminded the character Hannah Montana who is an ordinary school girl by day and a pop star by night.
The show has had numerous series' and has millions of fans worldwide so I think whatever Miley Cyrus does she is going to have a huge fan base.
Miley released a few albums under the Hannah Montana name before deciding she was going to go it alone and be herself, transforming herself into a well-known and credible artist to both children and adults.
Being such a talented artist and actress it is no doubt that Miley will have an extraordinary career and I'm sure we will be seeing a lot of her in the future.
MY GENERAL THOUGHTS ON THE ALBUM
Well my initial thoughts when I first downloaded this album were that there are not a lot of tracks with only 8. This did not really bother me as I didn't pay the full price but I do not think I would have paid the full price when it had first been released. I suppose since there are hardcore Miley fans out there they can get away with not putting more tracks on.
This album is definitely very versatile with Miley experimenting with ballads, pop songs and even some more rock style songs. She still has the songs that she is comfortable singing but is trying to branch out and find out who she is. It is the step from Disney Miley into mature Miley and I think it works very well.
1. Kicking and Screaming
This song gives the album a kick start and has a more rock feel to it. It shows that Miley has a great rock star essence to her voice and is very different from the earlier stuff we heard from Hannah Montana. I do like this song but if you sit and listen to it you will notice that there is not much content to the song, much of it gets repeated over again but saying that the only reason I really noticed was because of this review if you are just enjoying the album it is not really a problem. A very catchy tune that you will find yourself singing along to. 8 out of 10.
2.Party in the USA
This is Miley Cyrus' best selling single and I think there is a good reason for this. It is such a feel good tune with a catchy beat which makes you want to dance. I know I've heard this on a night out so that shows it isn't just for the young Hannah Montana fans. "So I put my hands up their playing my song, the butterflies fly away, nodding my head like yeah, moving my hips like yeah".
Has to be one of the best songs on the album, one of only a couple that was released so that shows it's a goodun. 10 out of 10.
3. When I look at you
This is a very slow song and to be honest I am not a big fan even sitting here listening to it I want to skip it but I will battle on. The verses are very slow and drab but the chorus does pick it up a bit.
To me it feels like a ballad but with no real feeling or meaning, I just don't get it and don't like it.
Miley sings well and shows that she has power in her voice but the song is not to my taste. 3 out of 10.
4. The time of our lives
Back to a good, fun upbeat song. The title track to this album and a worthy track at that.
All of the song is very upbeat with the chorus really allowing you to let go and dance around the house. "Let's have the time of our lives, like there's no one else around just throw your hands up high even when they try to take us down"
The song does not really give Miley they opportunity to show her voice very well as it is all really the same tempo apart from the beginning of the chorus where she really has to give it some oomph. Even so this is a great song. 9 out of 10.
5. Talk is cheap
Miley is doing her rock thing in this song which I really like. The beginning sounds a bit Disney-esque but after a short while it really begins to show a different side of Miley. Judging from her voice on this song I can honestly say that I think if Miley did decide she wanted to change direction in the future and become more of a rock artist she really could. Her voice is so versatile and songs like this prove that she is really talented. 9 out of 10.
After rocking out to the previous track you might want a slower more relaxed song and obsessed is a great song to do this to. It is very well placed in the album and the song itself is great as well.
It is a love song so as you can imagine it is very slow and airy in a way. I wouldn't describe it as a ballad more as a soft pop song.
Towards the end it has the bit that many love songs has where the artist has a little rock out and Miley's voice is excellent throughout. 9 out of 10.
7. Before the storm (Duet with the Jonas Brothers)
This is a live track take from a Jonas Brothers concert, you can hear a lot of screaming fans in the background! Miley sings with Nick Jonas and they both sing very well live but I am personally not very keen on the song, it has a very country feel to it. If you can imagine a blend of country music and Disney then you have got this song spot on. 5 out of 10.
8. The Climb
If I'm honest this song is mainly the only reason why I bought this album. It is such a beautiful song and is sung in a beautiful way, much better than the Joe Mcelderry copycat version.
I really like the softness and reality of the song. I think a lot of people can relate to the song and it really draws you in.
The second verse picks up from the first and Miley sings her heart out during the second chorus. "There's always gonna be another mountain, I'm always gonna wanna make it move, always gonna be an uphill battle, sometimes I'm gonna have to lose, aint about how fast I get there, aint about what's waiting on the other side, it's the climb". 10 out of 10.
Well for a Disney star album I think this is pretty good even though after browsing the web I have found that Miley has not written the majority of the songs on here but I suppose that is the same with a lot of artists these days. It's a shame really because it seems she has written a lot of songs just not on this particular album. Personally I am glad this album was on offer as it is a great one to have in your collection, Miley's voice is excellent throughout and apart from the exception of a couple of songs it is a great album.
