Everything about it reeks of indecisiveness and the LP lacks any sort of cohesive structure. After reaching a peak with the delightfully dismal 'Pornography,' it seemed the only way for the Cure to go was up towards a more positive outlook, and greater commercial success. The departure of bass player Simon Gallup left Robert Smith effectively writing and recording on his own, and with only the addition of Lol Tolhurst's keyboards and the session drums of Steve Goulding, this is essentially a Robert Smith solo album disguised under the Cure name. Fortunately, unlike other semi-solo albums in the past, most notably the Pink Floyd works hijacked by Roger Waters, this has nothing of the indulgent ego project about it, and genuinely sounds a lot more ...
