Music for Everyone to Enjoy
Whether you are new to Nona Simone or a life long admirer this is a great collection form a great singer. Given her very varied repertoire, aficionados might argue about whether or not this is the Very Best of her work, but every track is a good one.
My 18 year old daughter got me this record for Xmas because she knew how much I loved Nina Simone's wonderful voice. Then the CD mysteriously disappeared into my daughter's room, only to emerge months later.
Nina Simone's singing style includes folk, jazz, gospel and blues. Her mood during performances fluctuated between tragedy and joy, often in one song. She had a reputation for being a difficult performer, but none of that should get in the way of your enjoyment of this record. What I like best about listening to Nino Simone is that I always have an emotional reaction, she always makes me stop and listen, her music is never just background music.
About 5 years ago one of my friends recommended Nina Simone to me and, putting the recommendation down to some freak of nature and classifying Nina Simone as someone I thought my grandmother might listen to, I failed to take heed - MISTAKE!
Enlightened by the legendary Muller yoghurt ad, I discovered that I actually ALREADY liked Nina Simone (I just didn't know that the person singing WAS Nina Simone!)
Inspired by the power of advertising, I bought The Very Best of Nina Simone from cd-wow.com last week. They've got it for £8 at the moment and if you do a Google search you can almost always find a voucher code that gives you a wee bit extra (£1) off. Including delivery, that generally beats high street offers.
The tracklist is amazing (see below) and includes lots of songs that I was able to sing along to but didn't realise that I had Nina to thank for! Took the cd up to the Scottish highlands at the weekend and enjoyed it as a "soundtrack" whilst "cruising" (?!) around the glens - fantastic!
You can't beat it - it's a great feel-good cd and provides excellent background music for dinner and/or chat. It's also a top driving cd as the songs are catchy - there are lots that you think that you won't know but when they come on they're familiar.
Although it's probably fair to say that Nina Simone is a soul singer, there's also a strong undertone of jazz and folk in a number of the songs on the cd. There are a couple of covers - the 1964 Bob Dylan song Times They are a Changin'is interpreted well by Simone although it has to be said that it takes a lot to beat the original. This rendition probably doesn't do that but it's a good take on a good song. The same goes for the Bee Gees' To Love Somebody - it's a song that risks sounding like a karaoke favourite in a cover but the depth of Simone's voice means that it's a great version of the track.
Soooo glad that I bought it and wanted to pass on the recommendation. Mel, if you're reading this, I'm sorry... I should have listened!
