Advantages: Not a duff song in sight!

Disadvantages: none!

About 5 years ago one of my friends recommended Nina Simone to me and, putting the recommendation down to some freak of nature and classifying Nina Simone as someone I thought my grandmother might listen to, I failed to take heed - MISTAKE!

Enlightened by the legendary Muller yoghurt ad, I discovered that I actually ALREADY liked Nina Simone (I just didn't know that the person singing WAS Nina Simone!)

Inspired by the power of advertising, I bought The Very Best of Nina Simone from cd-wow.com last week. They've got it for £8 at the moment and if you do a Google search you can almost always find a voucher code that gives you a wee bit extra (£1) off. Including delivery, that generally beats high street offers.

The tracklist is amazing (see below) and includes lots of songs that I was able to sing along to but didn't realise that I had Nina to thank for! Took the cd up to the Scottish highlands at the weekend and enjoyed it as a "soundtrack" whilst "cruising" (?!) around the glens - fantastic!

You can't beat it - it's a great feel-good cd and provides excellent background music for dinner and/or chat. It's also a top driving cd as the songs are catchy - there are lots that you think that you won't know but when they come on they're familiar.

Although it's probably fair to say that Nina Simone is a soul singer, there's also a strong undertone of jazz and folk in a number of the songs on the cd. There are a couple of covers - the 1964 Bob Dylan song Times They are a Changin'is interpreted well by Simone although it has to be said that it takes a lot to beat the original. This rendition probably doesn't do that but it's a good take on a good song. The same goes for the Bee Gees' To Love Somebody - it's a song that risks sounding like a karaoke favourite in a cover but the depth of Simone's voice means that it's a great version of the track.

Soooo glad that I bought it and wanted to pass on the recommendation. Mel, if you're reading this, I'm sorry... I should have listened!

Sorry, but I just didn't get any idea really what is Nina Simone's music like.
