The Virgins were tipped to be the next biggest thing coming out of New York, their dance pop rock mixture was highly acclaimed and despite the obvious Strokes influences, they were touted as having a great deal of individuality. Now I'm not sure whether it was all hype or whether they were forced to put together an album far too quickly but the album doesn't seem to be the desired outcome. It's quite disjointed and whilst "Rich Girls" and "Radio Christiane" are just about reasonable enough, much of the album is rather bland and it seems like the band can't really be bothered to use their instruments most of the time as it is either sloppy ... I had high hopes for this album, as a friend in New York had been raving to me about The Virgins for a little while now. However, this excitement was short lived and fell flat when I actually listened to the CD. The opening track sounds vocally a little like Elvis Costello, which is a good thing, but this is just about where the good times end. The sirens in "Murder", although I can see why they were there, I felt they were not necessary. I felt by adding this novelty sound they were trying to sound different but they actually ended up sounding very ordinary indeed. Amaturish even.
