Dance pop rock that doesn't really do the trick (The Virgins - The Virgins)

Advantages: Two decent songs

Disadvantages: A bit too bland

The Virgins were tipped to be the next biggest thing coming out of New York, their dance pop rock mixture was highly acclaimed and despite the obvious Strokes influences, they were touted as having a great deal of individuality.

Now I'm not sure whether it was all hype or whether they were forced to put together an album far too quickly but the album doesn't seem to be the desired outcome. It's quite disjointed and whilst "Rich Girls" and "Radio Christiane" are just about reasonable enough, much of the album is rather bland and it seems like the band can't really be bothered to use their instruments most of the time as it is either sloppy or too sparse at different moments in time.

The vocals are perhaps the most interesting of all and vary from enjoyable to almost unbearable, the singer has an Elvis Costelloesque drawl which I happen to find quite cool, unfortunately at other times he uses falsetto and it doesn't really work - just sounding a little painful really.

It's a pretty short album at just 35 minutes, even less when you take the final odd hidden track in to the equation and proves poor value for money.

I wanted to like this band and can still see a little promise in them but they need to put a lot of hard work into their next release, if it is to shine.
