The opening track, Yours is No Disgrace is ten minutes long and a classic; it not only has a strong driving rhythmic beat with a complementing mellower passages, great, blistering guitar solos and solo passages, but it shows a marked improvement in songwriting ability with everything about the structure of the music being tight and relevant, despite the song's length. There's also the brillaint 8 min long Starship Trooper, a mellower more ly...more

Rating:

The Yes Album sees Yes change direction to a much more "progressive" sound and this is reflected very much in a change of line up, with the great guitarist Steve Howe being brought in as a replacement for the merely competent Pete Banks. Howe's abilities as a guitarist are now legendary and it'd be easy to argue that, technically he's better than Page and Hendrix and he's got damn near as much character too...he just didn't get the same recognition as he played in an obscure progressive band. Tome VI - Ange
Talented French symphonic prog, for fans of early Genesis. Hard for newcomers to appreciate.

The Secret Language Of Birds - Ian Anderson
Pleasant enough modern folk, without the jig element. Birdwatchers may be disappointed.

The Klaxon - And Also The Trees
Compellingly miserable with plenty of lighter moments. Repetitive sound after a while.

Kurr - Amiina
Interesting and highly lucid classical performance with a strong atmosphere. Lacking.

Saltbreakers - Laura Veirs
Unusual, intelligent songs; nice combination of genres; musicianship Sometimes annoying juvenilia style lyrics; some weak tracks

Evermind - Amethystium
Relaxing and eclectic ambience. Only suited for relaxation or background music, otherwise soon becomes repetitive and dull.

Disturbing The Peace - Alcatrazz
Something for Steve Vai completists. Pointlessly below average hair metal.

Intorno alla mia cattiva educazione - Alusa Fallax
A grand, detailed and eloquent progressive symphony. Necessarily patchy and uneven, with some experiments being more successful than others.

Angel Witch - Angel Witch
Classic heavy metal. Endless, tedious comparisons to other bands are inevitable.

Angels Of Venice - Angels Of Venice
Approachable and entertaining neoclassical music. Too much reliance on obvious cover songs.
