You're The One - Paul Simon

Crowned Review Here's The One (686 words)

Rating:

A new Paul Simon album is always something worth getting excited about especially as it has been so long since he made a great album. For me, Graceland was a milestone in his career, equalling if not exceeding his most excellent work in the early 70s. I was never overly impressed with The Rhythm of The Saints. Maybe it was too hard to follow up Graceland. So, with no new music to speak of in the 90s, except the overlooked Songs From The Capeman, it's good to see one the finest and most consistent songwriters of our time back in the spotlight. The compilation 'Shining Like a National Guitar' released earlier this year is a good retrospective view of ...

Capeman behind him, Simon has returned to what he does best. Coming on like Raymond Carver with a guitar, Simon seduces the listener with 11 ‘stories’. There are no hit singles here, just an album that intrigues and impresses from the outset. An early highlight is ‘Darling Lorraine’. Here, our ...

The Rhythm Of The Saints - Paul Simon

Premium Review Rhythm method (207 words)
by cswann - written on 19/09/00 (Very useful, 41 readings)
Rating:

After "Graceland", Paul Simon turned to Brazilian rhythms for inspiration, and they are strongly featured on "The Rhythm of the Saints". There is still an African feel to much of it, leftover from "Graceland", (Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Hugh Masekela feature on a couple of tracks) and it feels like a progression, in terms of muiscal style. My favourite song is "The obvious child" - it sounded truly innovative to me when it came out, in a similar way that Talking Heads' songs like "And she was" did, and I still love it. Another is "Born at the right time", with its beautiful tune and gentle rhythm. And ...

Great songwriting Songs about being the 'Last Bandit' sound funny in the (Wild) West Midlands

good tracklist some not so good ones

Live, Fun, Great Listening (advice - play LOUD) Doesn't feature Polcie classics and not one to relax to or for when you have a headache.

Classic Sting None

Fans will love it, cheap price usually, Stevie returns to an acoustic style Relatively poor quality songs, 13 songs just not fully thought out.

Incredible artistry, several career highlights. 'One Foot Wrong'.

Funky, upbeat and uplifting Two uninspiring instrumental tracks

The Olden Domain - Borknagar
Excellent progressive black metal from the best in the field. Style becomes repetitive, even when the songs sound different.

Suffer - Bad Religion
great songs, bad religion at their best some of the guitar needs sorting out

Origin - Borknagar
Fair neofolk album. Dull and devoid of interest.

No Control - Bad Religion
some amazing songs none

Live Cannibalism - Cannibal Corpse
Very heavy, just what you expect. Certainly not for the faint hearted.

Epic - Borknagar
More progressive take on the 'Empiricism' sound. Songs still sound similar, and there are more epic albums out there.

Come Clarity - In Flames
Musically accomplished. Too much screaming, drum beat is very samey.

Borknagar - Borknagar
Excellent musicians brought together for an intriguing concept. Structurally uneven at times.

And Four More Ways To Fight - Multi Purpose Chemical
Brilliant, original, varied album! None really, I guess it's a fairly short album though.
