Advantages: Something for every mood
Disadvantages: none i can think of
I was bought this album recently for my birthday and have played it everyday since!
The first Paolo Nutini song I heard was Last Request and I loved it, I imagined the singer being a middle aged man from Italy (due to the name) He is actually a 20 year old from Scotland-although his father is Italian.
He has no musical training and his big break came at a David Sneddon concert in his home town. David was delayed and Paolo was the winner of an impromptu pop quiz, the prize being a chance to perform while the crowd waited. As he was so popular with the crowd, a member of the audience offered to become his manager (I presume they were already in the business and not some random person!) The rest is history as they say.
This album is Paolo Nutinis first and Im certain it won't be his last. The cover is quite distinctive with its white, green, red and orange stripes and silhouettes of Paolo with his guitar.
Im one of those people who buys a CD because I like two songs then listen to just those two all the time, with this one I have listened to all the songs and can quite happily leave it playing rather than skipping back and forth. It has a mix of slow, quite sad songs and some feelgood ones too,so you the words are all in the little booklet so you can sing along happily or cry to it when you feeling sorry for yourself.
Im not too clued up on music genres but I would say this one was rock, with a lot of guitar playing, both electric and acoustic. There is also an acoustic version of Last Request right at the end of the CD, there is a long silence after the last song(alloway grove) then it just comes on, it is not mentioned anywhere and I only found it by chance as I left the Cd playing while I was busy - it gave me a bit of a fright but it sent shivers down my spine!!
I think Paolo has a beautiful, distinctive voice and his songs are straight from the heart with people he loves in mind. He sings naturally and you can hear an accent there still. It is rare to find this kind of music these days with all the manufactured bands and singers who can't actually sing. Although some of the songs are slower, he is not as depressing as the likes of James Blunt.
I would definitely recommend you give this album a try
Summary: A welcome change from manufactured pop
