      Disadvantages

Citing influences ranging from the decidedly serious Martin Sheen to the asinine Chevy Chase to funkmaster Bootsy Collins, the Beta Band is a delight. This aptly titled compilation of three separately released EPs is sure to leave music fans scratching their collective head while trying to define this Scottish band's intricate aural hodgepodge. The Beta Band makes a very distinct and exciting impression. There's the unusual coupling of acoustic guitar, horn, sampled beats, and a catchy refrain on "Dry the Rain"; the hypnotic instrumental "B+A"; and "She's the One," which opens with a chaotic, hippyish drum circle that segues first to an anthemic chorus and then to a highly processed breakdown complete with a Jew's harp. The Three EPs will dominate the CD player, becoming somewhat of an obsession, with each listen revealing some brilliant little nuance, quirk, or lyric.

This band is almost inspired with this compilation of their first three ep's. At times the music is a little bit tedious and at other times it seems to hit a nutural affinity with me that it is uncanny. It was worth listening to several times, and it seemed to improve more with each listening. It is a music that you can really focus on and discover new depths to it or you can relaxa and have it as background music and it fits the bill quite well on that front. There does appear to be some poor track organisation when trying to listen to this as an album but that is to be expected with it being a compilation. This is an interesting group that I will definitely look out for in the future as I have enjoyed this release and they show some potential for some amazing music in the future. On the other hand they are probably also capable of getting stuck in their own hype and releasing a load of rubbish that they will have created for the sake of it. They must try to find the right balance...

Hailed as the next great art school band, the Beta's are certainly different! This three quaters Scottish, one quater Londen seem to have struck gold here. Soothing melodies, intresting lyrics(to say the very least!) and strange sounds in the background keep the listener intrested. The album climaxes on the amazing "Push it out" which builds, and builds into something very special indeed. it is also intresting to see Steve's ( The lead singer) voice mature over the course of the three EP's. A great debut from what will become one of the most important bands of the next ten years.

i am mostly liking this album quite abit, so much so i actually brought a copy and got a free sticker of the shape at the top left hand side of the album cover!. back to the music - what a great listener of an album this is, also great for a sunday afternoon with its fairly soothing melodies and semi -phsycadelic vibe. this collection of e.p's is a more eclectic mix than the album that they released afterwards (with a little more hype surrounding them by this point), the album which i have heard but not purchased yet, is next on my list to buy, after i've replaced all the ones that got stolen a long with the rest of the contents of my ruc sac...
