The intention was presumably some sort of knowing commentary on the exploitation of teenage jailbait in the MTV age - although it was left to The New Yorker magazine to point out years afterwards that she had resembled nothing else as much as "an underfed Calvin Klein model". Nonetheless it picked up some awards, as Apple claimed the song was about "feeling bad for getting something so easily by using your sexuality." Fortunately the musical merit of the song is beyond ...more

Premium Review Tidal - Fiona Apple: Tidal by Fiona Apple (1268 words)
by - written on 04/09/08 (Very useful, 74 readings)
Rating:

Fiona Apple - Tidal Accomplished debut album from the then nineteen-year-old singer, writer and pianist, although her musicianship may have outstripped her songs at this nascent stage of her career. MTV awarded her their award for best new artist in 1997 and she won a Grammy the following year for best female rock vocal performance. Rolling Stone readers also considered "Criminal" to be the best song of 1997. Her penchant for angry tirades subsequently led to a media backlash. In 2008, another American magazine, Entertainment Weekly, reckoned Tidal was the twentieth best album since 1983, and in 2005 Blender deemed "Criminal" the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review ferocious and delicate (202 words)
by - written on 10/01/04 (Somewhat useful, 39 readings)
Rating:

Fiona Apple's album Tidal is incredibly ferocious and delicate along the rumbling sass and swagger or lithe soothes of her voice. Sleep to Dream is huskily rendered, like she told someone off a bit too loudly just prior to it; Sullen Girl reveals the fluid refinement of her vocal chords and her lyrical deftness, Shadowboxer is bold on pummeling, deep piano and voice tones. Criminal--"I've been a bad, bad girl I've been careless with a delicate man And it's a sad, sad world When a girl will break a boy just because she can." That about sums up the caustic craft of this song. Some of these songs are slow-forming but worthwhile (Slow Like ...  Read the complete review

Tidal - Fiona Apple: All female artist's SUCK !? (233 words)
by - written on 06/08/00
Rating:

Lets face it. Theres no such thing as a good female artist. Sure they release one good song but they never come up with an albums worth. If your lucky their attractive and look pretty on Album covers and posters (Yes I'm talking to you Britney Spears!) This is what I thought until I heard Fiona Apple. I'd heard about her music but I didn't think it would appeal to me. Then I came across an mp3 of hers and liked it so I downloaded the rest of the album. After a few listens I realised that this album was too good to be just on my hard drive so I bought the album. She's a singer/songwriting pianist. Being a massive Ben Folds Five fan I am ...  Read the complete review

Amazing, The bands finest hour, My Fave album none really

It's Dire Straits Missing a few 'classic' songs, Live performances might not be to everyone's taste

Live Volume - Corrosion of Conformity
Great, authentic, loyal performance. Uneven focus on the band's more recent style.

Into the Unknown - Bad Religion
Brett Gurewitz gets some guitar solos, and Greg Graffin shows he can do mellow too. A very lousy eighties synth-pop-rock album.

Carpet - Ceremonial Oath
Pleasant lead guitars, and an insight into the early years of melodic death metal. It's all about the guitars, and even those aren't particularly stunning.

Mother Earth - Avalanch

Symphony for a Psychosis - Al Azred
Superb guitars, and good enough reproduction of the brutal death style. Lacks originality in pretending to be American.

Pea Green Boat - Stewart Lee

Leijonaa metsästän - Asa

Bard's Song - Blind Guardian
It's a great old song. We didn't need five versions.

Age Of Chaos - Battleroar
More classic metal, this time enhanced by modern folk touches. Similar guitar tone makes songs sound somewhat alike on the surface.

Ba Dop Boom Bang - Grandmaster Flash
Hip-Hop & Rap - East Coast - 2005
