Fiona Apple - Tidal Accomplished debut album from the then nineteen-year-old singer, writer and pianist, although her musicianship may have outstripped her songs at this nascent stage of her career. MTV awarded her their award for best new artist in 1997 and she won a Grammy the following year for best female rock vocal performance. Rolling Stone readers also considered "Criminal" to be the best song of 1997. Her penchant for angry tirades subsequently led to a media backlash. In 2008, another American magazine, Entertainment Weekly, reckoned Tidal was the twentieth best album since 1983, and in 2005 Blender deemed "Criminal" the ... Read the complete review

Fiona Apple's album Tidal is incredibly ferocious and delicate along the rumbling sass and swagger or lithe soothes of her voice. Sleep to Dream is huskily rendered, like she told someone off a bit too loudly just prior to it; Sullen Girl reveals the fluid refinement of her vocal chords and her lyrical deftness, Shadowboxer is bold on pummeling, deep piano and voice tones. Criminal--"I've been a bad, bad girl I've been careless with a delicate man And it's a sad, sad world When a girl will break a boy just because she can." Lets face it. Theres no such thing as a good female artist. Sure they release one good song but they never come up with an albums worth. If your lucky their attractive and look pretty on Album covers and posters (Yes I'm talking to you Britney Spears!) This is what I thought until I heard Fiona Apple. I'd heard about her music but I didn't think it would appeal to me. Then I came across an mp3 of hers and liked it so I downloaded the rest of the album. After a few listens I realised that this album was too good to be just on my hard drive so I bought the album. She's a singer/songwriting pianist. Being a massive Ben Folds Five fan I am ... Products similar to Tidal - Fiona Apple
Live Volume - Corrosion of Conformity
Great, authentic, loyal performance.
Uneven focus on the band's more recent style.
Into the Unknown - Bad Religion
Brett Gurewitz gets some guitar solos, and Greg Graffin shows he can do mellow too.
A very lousy eighties synth-pop-rock album.
Carpet - Ceremonial Oath
Pleasant lead guitars, and an insight into the early years of melodic death metal.
It's all about the guitars, and even those aren't particularly stunning.
Symphony for a Psychosis - Al Azred
Superb guitars, and good enough reproduction of the brutal death style.
Lacks originality in pretending to be American.
Bard's Song - Blind Guardian
It's a great old song.
We didn't need five versions.
Age Of Chaos - Battleroar
More classic metal, this time enhanced by modern folk touches.
Similar guitar tone makes songs sound somewhat alike on the surface.
Ba Dop Boom Bang - Grandmaster Flash
Hip-Hop & Rap - East Coast - 2005
