I remember being bored one cold winters day in March of 83 and, plucking up the courage to face the wind and snow, decided to Journey to the local library in the hope of some escape . The library had just started hiring out music which was a bit of a misnomer as all they usually stocked were things that you d either never heard of or stuff that you would never dare take out in case some friend of yours happened to be standing behind you. although accompanied by probably the worst music video the world has ever seen, (I cringe to think about it even now-Journey were not a video friendly band) showcases perfectly how Journey could create a song dripping with melody and yet (in this case) still be considered a hard rock song. 'Send her my love' follows and is a fine ballad in the Journey tradition. 'Chain Reaction' follows and is the first (in my opinion) filler, fortunately saved by the utterly superb 'After the fall' immediately after. A song lamenting the break up of a romance it is not quite ballad, more a slow pop song. But if it is a ballad you want then 'Faithfully' ...

So lets start with what there is for the long term Journey fan; track 1, 'Only the young' from the soundtrack of Visionquest, a movie, if I recall correctly, about a wrestler who falls in love. The film was famously renamed as 'crazy for you' after the Madonna song of the same name from the soundtrack, which was a worldwide hit. 'Only the young' is a typical Journey song with a smooth as silk chorus.
