There has long been some discrepancy about how to pronounce this woman's name. Is it Law-per or Lau-per, with an ow sound. She might know, but then maybe not, because according to my friend who saw her live, she was off her head and in another world. This best of album contains all of her one hits, 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' and some others. No that's too harsh, she did have a few hits. She actually had four top ten hits. You probably just don't remember them.
Fifteen tracks then and 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' remains a staple favourite of any hen do. You know the sort of women who go crazy at her squarkish vocals. They hear the intro and realise 'yes indeed they are girls and yes oooh they like to have fun!' What are the chances of that. The record is catchy and camp and overplayed and I would happily never hear it again.
'I Drove All Night' is better, though I prefer Roy's version. Lauper's take is still unassuming though and her vocal is much more restrained here. A good example of her at her best. Her big one is the tearjerker 'Time After Time.' She sings it as if she has just had a fit or been crying in the bath for eight hours. Powerful, emotive, genuinely moving and a fine ballad to this day.
'True Colours' is great till she does the high bits, then you lose some of your ear cells. I like the melody though and the lyrics are sincere enough to make you want to return it for a few more plays. 'World Is Stone' takes a few listens before it hits you. The content goes up a notch and this seems to be her exploring a more mature side to her music. As a result it is more rewarding in the long run but not that instant or fun.
It's clearly wrong to like 'Goonies Are Good Enough,' but images of those kids underground looking for treasure come leaping back and you cannot help fall in love with the hook. She sounds like she is having a ball too.
The remake of 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' goes for a reggae vibe. It works but is a minute too long and the chorus goes on and on and on and on, a bit like this sentence. Not a bad compilation, but a few fillers along the way.
Cyndi Lauper Time after time The Best of Cyndi Lauper C.D Girls just want to have fun - 9/10. This song is great the lyrics make it good and fun, of course we want to have fun. I am sure most of you know this song, it is annoyingly catchy and repeats it’s self over and over. “When the working day is done You know girls they want to have fun” She Bop - 10/10 This is my favourite track on the whole C.D, the song is quite strange, when I listen to this I feel like going mad, you know one of those smash the house up numbers. It is a bit dark and unusual, the lyrics are weird and the beats are hard. She sings strong then gentle it really works. I drove all night - 10/10 Again a great song, another on for my favourites. The music and the lyrics are very exciting, Cyndi expresses great emotion all the way through this song. “Taste your sweet kisses Your arms open wide This feeling for you Is just burning me up inside Woke you from your sleep To make love to you” I could listen to this song over and over, you can relate to the lyrics and the song itself . What's going on - 8/10 this song is a little more gentle, she sings it high and soft, slow and emotional. The chorus is catchy and the music is a good listen. Time after time - 10/10. Really nice you can feel the mood in this song, again it melts me. There is a man singing with Cyndi in the chorus this makes the song sound nice and strong. The song is slow and gentle the lyrics tell a great story. “If you’re lost You can look And you will find me Time after time Suitcase of memories Time after sometime” True Colours - 10/10 - This song is probably one of Cyndi's best songs, this song helped her sing career. An excellent song, This song is about helping someone and being there for them. “And I see your true colours shining throug
h I see your true colours and that’s why I love you So don’t be afraid to let them show Your true colours are beautiful like a rainbow” This song is slow and filled with tease emotion. All through the night - 8/10. This song is easy going and nice, it talks about staying together through the night, again she sings from the heart with great passion in her voice. “Until it ends There is no end” The world is a stone - 7/10 this song is slow, high pitched. It isn’t very exciting to be honest, but again you have got to admire her style. Don’t want to be your friend - 7/10. This song starts like a love song but then her voice gets lower and stronger. “Don’t cry in the middle of the night no more” This song is nice but lacking excitement. The goonies “R” Good enough - 6/10 This sound starts strange, very beautiful and uneven in it’s beats. Then it goes a bit like some for her others; sorry I can’t really tell what she is singing about. Maybe Hell know 7/10. This starts off dancey and then she starts screaming a bit, I like it, she sounds crazy. This is catchy and it’s got a nice rhythm. When you were mine 9/10 wow go girl, this is good, she is singing about someone she loves. She says I love you more now then when you were mine. (ahrr) the song flows nice and the lyrics are easy to relate to. Iko Iko 4/10 =- don’t like it, it sounds like none of there others. Change of heart 6/10 - This song is another strange one. It has a funny rhythm, the song is very jerky and her voice is up and down. Hey now (girls just want to have fun) 10/10 This songs is a repeat of the first song but she sings it slower, I like the other one better to be honest. “Some boys take a beautiful girl And hide her away from the rest of the world” So there you have it
I love her music I can really get into it. I can understand that she is not everyone's cup of tea but if you like her music, you would love this C.D I brought it about 2 weeks ago from Safeway - 5.99 bargain.
