Every now and again you come across a piece of music that is so emotionally powerful, that moves you so profoundly, that somehow you know that your life will never be the same again. For me, Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time is that piece of music. Back when I was studying for my A-Levels, my music teacher recommended I join the local choral society who Tippett's oratorio A Child of Our Time in their upcoming programme: "It's one of those pieces that you just have to sing" my teacher enthused and me, being 17 and stubbornly sceptical of the world, grudgingly signed up.
