Advantages: Melodic,less punk than her last2albums.Vocally brilliant/lyrically stunning/musically unbeatable
Disadvantages: I cant think of ANY negative points and I have listened to this album for more than a decade!
To Bring You My Love is probably one of my most played albums since I first got it as a teenager! I really cant rate this album highly enough and the reason for this one being held in higher esteem than all her previous albums is simply that this album has a new found freedom the others dont seem to have.
Polly J Harvey split from Robert Ellis and Stephen Vaughn, which gave her the freedom to experiment and deviate from the old bluesy punk that dominated PJ Harvey's first two albums.
Although her previouos albums to this were very good and definitely a lot better than most of the bands around at that time, they seemed to focus too much on the harsh brutallity that punk is famed for (which is all good and well) but 'To Bring You My Love' gives a more complex theatrical variety of emotions to deal with. It is said that each song represents a grand gesture and after hearing this I think I can really see that in each song of the album.
Lyrically the album is peppered with religious metaphors which have a dusty Alabama feel to them. I have also heard it said that Harvey is lyrically reminiscent of Nick Cave's and Tom Wait: and from this album you definitely see a slighter bigger romantic gothic image of the songstress.
The songs have some many quirky and poignant lines in them that you will find it hard to have this album on just as background music and even though I have heard this album more than a thousand times I still find it near impossible to not sing along to it!
The sound of the album is really heavy but in a deep bass kind of way. There is something really sexy and deeply romantic about the sound of it. The music is eerie and dense with some really nice guitar and percussion embellishments.
For people who judge her badly on the first two albums-deciding they aren't a fan, be reassured that Harvey has diversified for the better. In this album she really does claw/crawl into your heart like a hypnotic erotic snake and I am certain you wont be dissapointed.
Summary: Once in your collection, this album will never leave it!
