Now I have chosen to review this, because a couple of these girls are now members of classy girl group The Saturdays. Before they developed into full blown ladies, they were dabbling in commercial pop a few years before that. Who and when: S Club Juniors initially before changing the name to S Club 8, presumably to signify the growing up part had happened. On this album: 'One Step Closer' is a seriously good debut pop single and finds the gang in upbeat mood, delivering a cheesy chorus with plenty of danceability about it. The 8 members of S Club Juniors were modelled off S Club 7 (who soon split after their formation - coincidence?!). Their first album was Together, which was a collection of thirteen fun and entertaining songs. The first three tracks on the CD had been previously released as singles. One Step Closer was the first single for the Juniors, and was a huge success. It's one of my favourite songs, with an upbeat tempo and cheeky rhythm. The second is Automatic High, which was the Juniors' summer hit, an interesting take on music with a rather repetative set of lyrics but a great track nonetheless. The third track in New Direction. Today saw me uttering a sentence to my daughter that I have never said before – “Can I borrow your S Club Juniors album?” She was so surprised, she asked me to repeat what I had said. This was followed by a pause and a “Why?” Perhaps she thought I was going to put it in a charity shop bag or something. When I explained I wanted to review it, she sighed with relief and well, here I am… To give it some credit, the bright cover and glossy CD booklet are quite nice.
