... pleasing bass line by Derek Bramble. Bowie collaborated with all the right musicians, and even on a fairly mediocre album, he still delights us with the finest talents of unknown musical heroes. This was the album version of this track and contains an extended guitar solo to end. An interesting piece, thought provoking and a gentle step into the album. We will not be shocked by surprises within in this album, so by Bowie standards, this was an album out of the ordinary. Track two feels as though its had been pinch...more

Crowned Review Tonight - David Bowie: Where's The Star Man Tonight...? (2459 words)

Trying to analyse a unique and diverse artist such as David Bowie, it is the ultimate difficult task of configuring who was the real Bowie and what was his exceptional work. I have read several concepts on the album, ‘Tonight,’ and because I am not the altogether, die hard, ‘dye my hair orange and call me Ziggy,’ Bowie fan. I have managed to accept this true enough poor album by Bowie as an exceptional album by a different side of Bowie. Anyone who has ever listened to his music and seen him through the decades will have accepted that this chameleonic figure can adapt himself to any musical genre he chooses. I feel that the listener is probably missing out ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Give this a very wide berth (544 words)

This was David Bowie's follow-up to the huge-selling "Lets Dance" and it was originally released in 1984. It is one of his weakest albums, no sorry make that THE weakest album, made up of tracks not good enough to get picked for "Let's Dance", awful cover versions, and to add insult to injury, DB plunders the vaults for the songs co-written with Iggy Pop from 1977's "The Idiot". Whilst this worked beautifully on "Lets Dance" (China Girl was of course that song), the ones on here pale into nothingness compared to that. Mere words alone cannot describe how terrible this album is, and yet it starts off brilliantly ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Tonight - David Bowie: Bowie gets lost in the mid-80s (121 words)
by - written on 24/09/00 (Useful, 41 readings)
Rating:

After Let's Dance, you'd think David Bowie would have capitalized on his recent return to chart favour with a corker of an album (something that wouldn't actually happen until 1993). Fans and critic now agree that the follow up disc, Tonight, was an absolute failure. The two singles - Loving The Alien and Blue Jean - being the only saving grace on an otherwise lacklustre outing. The 1995 reissue added the tracks This Is Not America, As The World Falls Down and Absolute Beginners bringing the total number of good tracks up to five - all of which are on the 2CD singles set. Even a duet with Tina Turner's not worth the ...  Read the complete review
