recordings in late 1981 and early 1982 while in a band named Another Pretty Face These sessions at Redshop Studio are the earliest recordings that would be released under the The Waterboys name. During the same period, Scott formed the short-lived band The Red and the Black, with saxophone player Anthony Thistlethwaite, after hearing him play on Waiting on Egypt, a Nikki Sudden album. The Red and the Black performed nine concerts in London during which time Thistlethwaite introduced Scott to drummer Kevin Wilkinson, who joined The Red and the Black. Don't Bang the Drum starts off really mellow, then erupts with loads of drums, which tug at the heartstrings, especially with Mike Scott's fierce but slightly mournful vocals. The Waterboys often diversify outside of the typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus format, which works especially well on this song, building up to a climax then fading away leaving you with a sense of something awesome. The other song that really stands out in a similar way is 'The Pan Within', my favourite track on the album. Track 2 - The Whole of the Moon is the most famous Waterboys song, and a very good one at that. The lyrics are very poetic: when listening ...

However I never was very good at literary interpretation at school so that could be b*ll*xs! After completing the album, Karl Wallinger left The Waterboys . Reasons for him leaving are varied, either he wasn't happy that Mike Scott was dominating the band ( 7 of the 9 songs on "This is the Sea" are credited solely to Mike, with the other two having one each co-credit with the other band members), or the old classic, musical differences.
