Back in the days when film soundtracks weren't an excuse for record companies and artists to get over-exposure came the rather excellent soundtrack to a rather appallingly predictable and schmaltzy movie. Of course, with Tom 'two expressions' Cruise in the starring role it was bound to be a success. The fact that the storyline was about as predictable as Westlife getting to number 1 was irrelevant as girls wet their pants in their millions.
The music certainly made up for it with its mixture of smooth ballads and inoffensive AOR. Kenny Loggins, a man who no-one over here has ever heard of since, gets to display his rather piercing voice on two tracks and they're pretty rocking too! Old AOR stalwarts Cheap Trick and Loverboy get a bit of well deserved publicity although it probably didn't boost their recrod sales.
Of course, Take My Breath Away was the big hit and gave Berlin some publicity and it alerted me to their excellent Count Three and Pray album which I would definitely recommend.
There's not really much you could take offence at here and it makes for a great CD to drive to or to have on in the background. It's not exactly something you would sit and purposely listen to.
One word of warning - don't buy the inferior standard UK version as the US version now boasts a dump load of extra tracks and has been digitally remastered giving the sound an extra boost.
