No Doubt-Tragic Kingdom

Sugar and spice, and all things nice. Add a
lashing of anger with such trivialities, such as
being a girl, or being sixteen, and you have No
Doubt. In many ways this is a rather catchy album,
with a lack of thought-provoking lyrics. In the
same way, however, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is
just a mistake. In this album No Doubt have
managed to choke up fourteen songs with astounding
originality. Perhaps most of the originality has
sprung from the "Barbie of Ska". Her voice
although perhaps no Alanis Morrisette, or Kate
Bush is worth a large credit at least. Gwen
Stefani has a wide range of vocals, and that same
originality.

The tunes in this album are also worth a comment.
As I mentioned before each tune is well-written
and performed, and most of all original.
"Spiderwebs" begins with an Hawaiian hint, quickly
turning into a different beat with varying speeds.
As catchy as a spider web to the fly itself, and
as intellectual as the bands image. "Excuse Me
Mr." is another classic, but if I were to comment
on every classic, I would be going into a detailed
description of each song on t
he album.

Now the next song is one of their more popular
hits. And deservedly so... my favourite on the
album. Beginning with a soft, pleaful tune, and
soon blowing up into something more obviously
angry. "Oh... I've has it up to here!" sings Gwen,
before turning back into an angel child once more.
The song continues in much the same pattern,
resulting in a splendid track, which is fit to
represent the quality of the whole album.

Other songs to buy this album for are "Happy
Now?", "Don't Speak" (especially if you prefer the
slower side of No Doubt), "Sunday Morning" and
basically the rest of the songs on the album.
An original band, who are one of the few, who can
pull off the whole "pop-pain-rage" thing. The
sleeve is quite interesting, telling the tale of
"The Tragic Kingdom". All in all this album is
worth having in your cd collection, and yet again
I recommend it to you. Pop-punk at it's best, and
a band that fit well with other bands in the Ska
category, well living up to the standard of
Madness. No Doubt indeed.
