Advantages: Sneakingly lovable, Great songs, Cool as flick

Disadvantages: Not instantly accessibly

I just wrote an opinion of Flaming Lips "Telepathic Surgery" entitled 'A Good Place to Start' because it was the album that got me hooked on the band. But when I really considered it as an album, and my musical taste, which is a bit left field, I realised that Telepathic Surcery might not be as good a place to start for other people, who had discovered the band via 1999's popular "Soft Bulletin" album.

So I asked myself, "Where can a fan of more mainstream music get on board the Flaming Lips train?" And the answer I came up with was here, at Transmissions from the Satellite Heart. In places the album fuses their on-going obsession with meadering psychedelia to a newer and more structured rock approach. The result is two very accessible tracks, "She Don't Use Jelly" which has subsequently become a staple of the band's live act, and "Turn It On" which charted in the USA.

The rest of the album is a little more difficult to appreciate on first hearing. Titles like "Pilot Can at the Queer of God" explain as well as any extemporising can what you should expect. But given time, the cunning tunefullness and hidden hooks get under your skin, and this becomes an album to love dearly.
