Seldom can an album have been more crucial in a music career than "A Trick of the Tail" was for Genesis. After the recording and stage shows of their previous effort "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" Peter Gabriel, the lead singer had left the band. Gabriel's lyrical contribution (he wrote every word of The Lamb) and mesmeric stage presence led to a popular misconception that he practically WAS the band. To make matters worse, rather than find a replacement for Peter (although they did audition), the band decided on a spot of internal promotion and gave the lead singer spot to Phil Collins, the current drummer (Joke: How do you tell when a ... As a teenager growing up in the year 2001, it is far too easy to disregard all the years of recorded music that have preceeded this one. Over a period of perhaps 10-20 years, musicians ideas have been so dull and lifeless, that we come to expect no more from them. That was the major supprise when i first played this album. I wasn't supprised by the songs so much, only how much more intricate and complicated they were compared to anything that graces the charts these days. And im not easily impressed. After having auditioned many potential vocalists for the band it was decided that only Collins sounded good singing the material lined up for the new album. He had previously sang a couple of lighter, folk style tracks on the group's previous albums and had also been a backing vocalist for Gabriel. The two men's voices were infact so similar in tonal quality that on tracks like 'Harlequin' (from 'Nursery Cryme') it is almost impossible to tell the two singers apart. Stepping ... This album is the album which Genesis fans anxiously waited for. The first album without frontman Peter Gabriel. Peter left the band after ‘The Lamb’ and the press said that without Peter there would be no Genesis. Everyone thought that because Peter was this charismatic figure on stage that he wrote most of the songs, but that wasn’t so. All band members contributed to each album they made (exception being The Lamb). Genesis were very determined to make their next album an outstanding one and it was. Phill, whose main talent was drumming, took over as the lead singer after auditioning for singers as they could not ... Read the complete review
