Advantages: Great artist, fantastic lyrics and songs

Disadvantages: I had to almost search for bad points

After the success of my reviews recently I have decided to review two CD's that I never thought I would review. Here is number 1, Try This by Pink.

---------------------
Who is Pink?
---------------------

Born Alicia Moore, Pink is an American rock chick with an attitude. This shines through into her music and she is famous for her 'I Don't Care' attitude about everything. She has become more famous however for her powerful vocals and lyrics which have made her into the star she is today. She has become of the best singers to perform live (forgot where I read this), giving everything she has into each song. Here is the review:

---------------------
The Album
---------------------

This is the third album by Pink, here is the track list:

------------------------
Track 1- Trouble
------------------------

I love this song, I actually thought this was the first song to be released off the album, as it was the song that I first heard and it's the song that made me buy the album. I adore this song, I really do. This is more of a jazzy track, and it starts off with either a bass or the bottom E string being played, giving it a very great beat. When she gets into the chorus, everything else kicks in.

The one thing with this song, is the lyrics are very catchy. You will always find yourself singing along with them, I think the video is brilliant as well, I know a lot of people didn't like it, but it's what made me listen, I think a good song and video is one that you remember years later and I remember that video clear as day and it's got to be at least 2 years since I've seen it.

The track may not be brilliant when you first hear it, but it is most definitely a grower, her vocals are brilliant. She is never overpowered by the music and always seems to be in control, her vocals make this track a lot rockier which fits straight into my favourite genre of music perfectly.

This track is a great rock song, which starts off the album perfectly and shows you just what's to come. A very strong track with brilliant catchy lyrics.

Memorable Lyrics: "No attorneys, To plead my case No opiates, To send me into outta space, And my fingers, Are bejeweled, With diamonds and gold, But that ain't gonna help me now"

Rating: 9/10 (One of the best on the album, very powerful and very catchy. Brilliantly preformed by Pink)

--------------------------------
Track 2- God Is A DJ
--------------------------------

I was never a fan of this track compared to a lot of the other songs on the album, but I has this one on in the car earlier today I just had to keep listening to it. It's a brilliant dance track; it does remind me a lot of Walk Away by Kelly Clarkson. I know this was done before, but as soon as it got to the chorus, it had the same sort of beat and the same sort of uplifting feel to it.

I think this track is great, a brilliant dance track as I said before, I think if you are a fan of her other upbeat tracks then you will love this one. Her vocals are amazing in this track, very raw and very unique. I've always said that some of the artists sound like her, I'll never say that she sounds like other artists, because I think Pink is truly unique. Her vocals are amazing, and her writing ability is awesome.

I think if you look into the lyrics a bit more, there is a lot more there than just a 'dance' track, the lyrics are quite meaningful especially in the chorus. With the lyrics shown below, I believe she is saying that life is a dance floor, not every one get's what they want, however it's how they use what they do have that matters. Quite logical I think.

Memorable Lyrics: "If God is a DJ, Life is a dance floor,Love is the rhtym,You are the music,If God is a DJ,Life is a dance floor,You get what you're given,It's all how you use it"

Rating: 8/10 (Another very strong track with some pretty good and meaningful lyrics, she proves she hasn't just got great vocals but a great writing ability)

---------------------------------
Track 3- Last To Know
---------------------------------

Pink's sung and wrote better however I just think this track is brilliant. It's got more of an R'n'B feel to it, but I just think it's so loud and so catchy that it really sticks in your head which I think makes a brilliant song.

This track is a lot more angrier than the previous tracks and you can hear this not only through the lyrics but the emotion she conveys through her voice. I can imagine and of course I wasn't doing this in the car earlier, almost screaming along to the chorus of this track (blush), it's a very upbeat and sing along track, and you really find yourself in quite a happy mood after listening to the track, despite it not being a happy track.

It's still quite a dancy track, and you'll find yourself bobbing your head or tapping your feet until you learn the lyrics and then I'm sure you'll be singing along.

To some this is considered one of the weaker tracks on the album, as to some people it doesn't all fit, it's not typically a Pink song, however I love the change and think it's fit perfectly in the middle of the album. Very well produced and of course brilliantly sung. I think the ending is pretty great as well as it finishes quite loud with her going 'The Last To Know' and then it ends. Nothing too special, but it stuck in my head.

Memorable Lyrics: "Why was I the last to know, That you weren't coming to my show you coulda, Called me up to say "good luck", You coulda called me back you stupid f**k, Why was I the last to know?

Rating: 9/10 (Another very strong track, one of those ones you'll be singing for days afterwards)

---------------------------------
Track 4- Tonight's The Night
---------------------------------

Probably the weakest on the album, from the first beat I knew it was going to be a disappointment. I really hate the fact that this is on the album, because it's a great album and this track is just mediocre. I think it's a great break from the likes of the rockiness of God Is A DJ and Last To Know, however it never seems to work.

I think the reason it doesn't work, is not the lyrics or her vocals, but the instrumental pieces, they never seem to accentuate her voice, they work against it not for it.

I think it might be a track which you will like after a few listens but I myself skip it everytime it's on, I'm not a very big fan. Her vocals are not as good as they are ruined by the instruments.

Memorable Lyrics: "Bought myself a quick, cheap ticket, looking for a brand new scene, Gotta get the hell outta Hollwyood cause everything is halloween, Hit the town brass knuckles, make all the good people stare, I hope I don't end up in jail, but then again I don't really care"

Rating: 5/10 (The instruments work against her voice, it makes for quite a painful listen)

---------------------------------
Track 5- Oh My God
---------------------------------

I like this song, Pink seems to be speaking, rather than singing in the verse however it works so well. Apparnetly she collaborates with someone called Peaches, who is a great addition to the song.

I think this song however does try to hard, I think her voice and her lyrics are good, however it's just a bit too raunchy to go with the rest of Pink's material and fits alright, but again I find myself skipping.

It's not a weak track, in the slightest as everything does seem to work, I think the collaboration was a great idea, however the track is just a bit too raunchy and out of place on the album and it's not as good as the first three tracks.

Memorable Lyrics: "I understand all, Now climb my sugar walls, Problem solved it's dissolved, with the solvent known as spit
Lickity lick not so quick it's a, Slick ride make my mink slide, cause were all pink inside"

Rating: 6/10 (A good song, but that's about it, it's just a bit too raunchy to be good enough)

------------------------------------------------- -----------------
Track 6- Catch Me While I'm Sleeping
------------------------------------------------- -----------------

This reminds me a lot of her competition when this album came out which was Christina Aguleria's album Stripped. I think it's a brilliant track, however I think on this album it's a bit out of place.

The song is very soft and a ballad, the lyrics are brilliant as usual and her voice is brilliant, but throughout I couldn't help thinking Christina obviously copied the idea of this song from Pink, of course as Pink is too original.

I found out recently that this track was supposed to be on M!ssundaztood, however never made it. I think it's a beautiful song, I think it would have been better if the instruments were less, maybe if he was just her an acoustic guitar and maybe some drums it would sound a lot more raw and it would just go so easier with her brilliant vocals. I think so far, in this album, this is her best vocals. Very powerful and very raw.

I think Pink back then hated the idea of slow songs as not a lot of her albums are filled with them, however as you can tell with her album 'I'm Not Dead', a lot of the tracks are slower and I think this showcases her voice a lot more and she learnt that most of her fans would buy the album anyway as they care mostly about her vocals and her lyrics rather than the genre of the songs, so why not give them what they want.

A brilliant and nice addition to the album.

Memorable Lyrics: "People always fallin', In and out of love and, It can be pretty painful, too, And maybe, Oh maybe I'm just not strong enough, Sad but true, So tell me what's the use?"

Rating: 8/10 (Quite a nice track, a little bit out of place, which is why the lower rating but still very nice)

---------------------------------
Track 7- Waiting For Love
---------------------------------

Another slower song, her vocals are amazing on this track. I'm not too keen on the backing of this track, I think it's why I had to give it a lower rate, as the lyrics are gorgeous as are her vocals, however the background noises are just unessasary.

It's a slow RnB track, I think the chorus is just amazing. Very powerful. Her vocals really shine in this track, it's another long track as is the track before, however it's quite nice when great tracks are long. However this does remind me again of Christina Aguleria's tracks on Stripped. I'm not sure what makes me think this as I've heard this song millions of times before, but never heard it until I've wrote this review. It's got the same sort of backing, the same sort of harmony on the tracks. It just seems very familiar.

The emotions Pink manages to convey through her vocals is just pure brilliance, I really can't say that enough and in the ending of this track, she really lets loose and her vocals are probably the best they have been on the album. Another stand out track.

Memorable Lyrics: "She looks to the sun, Help her to carry on, Braking down all the years , Wondering how she got here, She drifts through the sky , Counting the reasons why , How my life turned so fast, Remembering all of the past"

Rating: 9/10 (Vocally one of the best, there's only one thing that stops this track from being a 10/10, and that is the backing at the start of the track. I think if she had sung the whole song like it ends it would have been a 10/10 song)

---------------------------------
Track 8- Save My Life
---------------------------------

I think this one is outshone by the rest of the album, I think it's wrongly placed within the album as I think it is a brilliant song, but it's a bit too poppy to come after Waiting For Love.

One thing I have always praised Pink on is that she doesn't let the music overpower her voice, however I think the production in this song was completely wrong, she does get overpowered slightly all the way through and I think if they had pulled back on the instrumentals and or she let her voice go, I think it would have been a better track.

However I really am looking for problems here, it's a very nice pleasant track. Nothing you'll be remembering for days to come, it's memorable, but not striking as other tracks on the album are, it's just good. I think the chorus is beautiful, she seems to repeat the title and it really does sound quite good with her brilliant vocals. A nice track.

Memorable Lyrics: "She had the man of her dreams, And some success, And she was so happy, and looking well, It was this one dark night, that she, Slipped, And then the next morning that she, Felt like a piece of shit, So she's hanging out, and she's
With the crowd, and she's, Travelin' where the wind is blowing"

Rating: 7/10 (Another strong track, a bit out of place as it comes after two brilliant songs, however as a stand alone, beautiful)

---------------------------------
Track 9- Try Too Hard
---------------------------------

Finally this is what you expected from this album. Another strong rock track. The instruments accentuate her vocals and it's just powerful. I don't think it's in the same league as the first three; however it's still a brilliant track.

I remember reading Pink had a lot of criticism about this track, I'm not sure why but I think it's about the chorus where she says 'And it's people like you that make me sick' as she talks about people that really try to fit in, but it doesn't work because they try too hard. However if you listen closely at the end she changes the chorus, it goes from being "it's people like you" to "It's people like us that make me sick" saying she is just the same and tries too hard and that she's not just calling other artists fake, but she's calling herself fake as well. Very clever.

I think Pink is very smart, she produces albums which are just brilliant, her lyrics are what stand out however, they are always smart and usually have a little difference in them to most people, she uses metaphors a lot as well. This is shown throughout this track.

It's a very nice track, not one you'll remember for days, but a strong one anyway.

Memorable Lyrics: "123... You follow every line, you wear your perfect patch and style, But you're like a satellite and you're driftin' through the sky, You can't make up your mind about this or that, or anything at all, So you go with the flow and hope to God that no one knows it"

Rating: 7/10 (A very strong rock track, with very clever lyrics)

------------------------------------------------- -----------------
Track 10- Humble Neighbourhood
------------------------------------------------- -----------------

This is a great track, not my favourite though as I think it's not Pink's best lyrics as it's not really about much, her vocals are brilliant as well. The song is one of those ones which you listen to, but after listening to the whole album, you'll forget it's in the album.

It's a very upbeat track, but with nothing really special about it. I think this is what's good about Pink's tracks is that they're always special, but there are sometimes a few ones that don't really match up and this is one of them. I don't really have much more to say about this track.

Memorable Lyrics: "From the humble neighbourhoods, We're takin' over the dance floor, From the humble neighbourhoods, We're gettin' out of control"

Rating: 5/10 (Poor compared to some of the others on the album)

---------------------------------
Track 11- Walk Away
---------------------------------

Another slowish song, I think it's very vocally and lyrically powerful. However I'm not as keen on the production of the song, I don't think the instrumentals make it a Pink song, it's just a bit too poppy.

The song is about a past relationship, where she decides it was too difficult so she walks away. Not the best song by far as it really does seem out of place on the album, it's not what you expect from Pink, which sometimes is a good think, but in this case it's not very good.

A listenable song, I think the vocals in this track make up for the fact that it's not awfully brilliant, very powerful and very raw. It's great that even when it's a dud song, she makes it brilliant with her vocals.

I'm struggling about what to say about this song, as I'm quite torn. I think the lyrics are brilliant as are her vocals however, there's a big but, there's nothing special here, and the instruments don't work to help her voice. I think if the instruments weren't there and it was done acoustically or accapella, it would be a 10/10, however it made it a lot less listenable.

Memorable Lyrics: "You throw your hands up and walk away, When times get hard you always walk away, You get mad and say you're leavin', Why is it so hard for you to talk to me?, When it's so easy for you to walk away"

Rating: 6/10 (The rating for this changed a lot, I'm still unsure really as it's got some of the best vocals on the album however it just didn't work)

---------------------------------
Track 12- Unwind
---------------------------------

Another okay track, she tries to do what the first three tracks did, but it doesn't work. It's got a great beat and her vocals are just outta this world, but there's just something about it which doesn't' bring it up to the same level as the others. It's not memorable, I think that might be the reason. I had no idea this was even on the album.

I think the song is brilliantly produced. I think everything does work, but the only reason I'm saying it's not brilliant is because you do find yourself comparing it to other tracks on the album and it just doesn't work in comparison. If you listen to it as a stand alone I'm sure you'll love it, but listening to it in the album, behind all of the other tracks, not so amazing.

Memorable Lyrics: "My life is like a fairytale, That nobody believes in, I can't remember anything, Not the people, not the places I've been, Just one more day you can make it, babe, That's what I tell myself, And everything that I love in life, It is killing me, 'cause it's bad for my health"

Rating: 6/10 (In comparison with the other rocky tracks, vocally great, but other wise nothing memorable)

---------------------------------
Track 13- Feel Good Time
---------------------------------

This could have been a great confusion. Listening to this on Windows Media Player, it's saying this track is called Love Song which is actually track 14. Confusing, luckily I knew this track so well that I managed to not write about the wrong track.

Brilliant. One word can describe this track. I just think it's such an uplifting track which everyone will love. This track came out for Charlie's Angels 2, and I don't think they could have picked a better artist to do there 'theme song'. Pink is the epitome of Charlie's Angels. The song is so rocky and works so well on this album.

Pink's vocals are so raw on this track, one of the best vocals on the album. I think what makes this track so great is the background instruments. They work with Pink, instead of against her, they seem to make her vocals seem a lot more powerful. A very catchy track and one of her most popular songs.

Memorable Lyrics: "we go in the back, paint our money black, spend it on the enemy, sleeping in the church, riding in the dirt, put a banner over my grave, Make a body work, make a begger hurt, sell me something big and untamed"

Rating: 10/10 (A very good track, very powerful in the album and as a stand alone)

---------------------------------
Track 14- Love Song
---------------------------------

Not long enough. This is the only thing bad about this song. If you like the slower songs in 'I'm Not Dead' then this song is just what you'd like. The track is just Pink and a guitar. The start to this track is beautiful, it starts with the guitar playing chords and then Pink humming above it, before going into singing. The drums then come in, but very lightly.

It's a very soft song, and the one thing that get's me about this song is like all of the other songs on the album. The simplicity of the lyrics and the way she sings, never forced, it always sounds very natural and I think the vocals in this song are the best on the whole album. Especially when she gets into it near the end, so powerful, pure and unique. There's no comparison here at all to other artists.

The track is very heartfelt, it's another 'love' song of course, there are not a lot of lyrics, but it's a very memorable song still which is sung to Pink's best. I just think the song is so listenable, especially if you have it on repeat. I think the pace of the song and the production with the softness of the instruments and her voice being soft but powerful just makes it one of my favourite tracks of hers ever.

Memorable Lyrics: "I've never written a love song, That didn't end in tears, Maybe you'll rewrite my love song, If you can replace my fears, I need your patience and guidance, And all your lovin' and more, When thunder rolls through my life, Will you be able to weather the storm?, There's so much I would give ya, baby"

Rating: 11/10 (Just such a nice track, so soft and memorable)

------------------------------------------------- -
Track 15- Hooker (Hidden Track)
------------------------------------------------- -

Okay not the best vocally or lyrically on the album, but it's such a funny track that you don't really care about it. The track does seem to have a lot of swearing in it, but who cares. It's a very upbeat track, which get's you laughing and listening to the lyrics, I think this is a great track to end on.

Like all songs, there's always going to be rumours surrounding this one, and Pink being Pink, slating everyone and anything, there was big speculation about who she was actually talking too on this track. Nothing much to really say, just a brilliant track to end on.

Memorable Lyrics: "You aint nothing but a hooker, selling your f****g soul"

Rating: 9/10 (A very strong, funny track, great ending)

--------------------
My Opinion
--------------------

I'm doing my Pink CD's a bit backwards, I started off reviewing her latest album 'I'm Not Dead', then this album and then M!zzunderstood should be up soon. Some people say this is one of her weaker efforts and I have to disagree. You really have to listen to this album to understand, but it's so different which is where most of the criticism came from, but it's different in a good way. Gone are the radio songs as I call them, over played and over produced.

There are some weak songs on the album, but I think because in comparison to the other songs I had to find a weak point with the album. The good thing about this album is the difference from M!zzunderstood, it's got a whole range of genre's which means it appeals to everyone, from RnB to Pop songs to Rock, Pink pulls them all of magnificently and too her best ability.

Pink always seems to take chances, not a lot of people, especially self confensed rock chicks would put songs like 'Love Song' on such a rock filled album, but Pink defies everything and put it on and I know I'm not the only one who believes this to be her best and my most loved song. Such emotion and her voice is just brilliant here.

The album may be filled with a few surprises, but one of the things that was expected was Pink's main style of music, the rock/pop songs, which are completely Pink songs. They are completely filled with such angst and emotion that you can't help but love them.

Pink's style is very unique, I don't think she's like any other artist, there are a few styles I think Christina Aguleria has picked up, but after finding out Linda Perry helped Agueleria as well as Pink it's not too shocking. Her writing ability is what shocks me and makes this album what it is, she is a lot cleverer than she lets on, the lyrics showcase this. They are filled with emotion when emotion is needed, when angst is needed, she provides and so on, everything seems to fit and with the addition of her vocals, it just works.

This album is not as good as 'I'm Not Dead' however I do believe it's slightly better or a lot more mature than M!zzunderstood, it just shows that after each album Pink only get's better and better. The lyrics in I'm Not Dead are a lot more poignant and I think she realised that slow songs actually do work within the album.

Pink is always consistent, this is one thing you can always say about her. The weak tracks I have mentioned on the album, are weak but if I had to compare them to other artists out there today, they would be 10 times as good. Each track she produces has her stamped all over it, either with her writing ability or her husky voice, or her attitude, it just seems to all come together.

--------------------
Her Vocals
--------------------

I think I have mentioned her vocals quite a lot in this review, but I'll still give a little bit here for you. I think there are three words to explain her voice, amazing, unique and emotion-filled (yes that counts as one!). She always manages to deliver, like I've always said, she hardly ever lets the instruments overpower her voice, which is a great difference from a lot of artists out there today.

--------------------
Her Lyrics
--------------------

I think more than anything they are very clever lyrics. I think that she manages to put a lot more emotion into her lyrics than a lot of people realise. This is something that I always credit to Pink, you can never really say that her lyrics are crap.

------------------------------------------------- -----------------
The Album As A Whole- Should You Buy It?
------------------------------------------------- -----------------

I managed to buy this album 3 years ago (ish) for £3.97 from Woolworths, alongside M!ssunderstood which cost me £3.00, this was 3 years ago, maybe more so I have no idea what sort of price you could get them for now. What I'm trying to say is, go and buy them. All three albums, I will be reviewing M!ssunderstood soon, so you'll see what I mean, but this album, M!ssunderstood and I'm Not Dead are three of the best albums I have ever owned.

You won't be disappointed, if you like the look of what I say about this artist and maybe haven't heard of her before, check her out, either by buying the albums, or on the links below on YouTube. She is just one of the best.
