Advantages: Consistent style, strong tracks
Disadvantages: None really
This was Pink's third album, released after the great success of Missundaztood, but it didn't get the same commercial or critical acclaim. Now I'm going to lay my cards on the table here and say that I think this is totally unfair: in my opinion this is a brilliant album, even better than its predecessor.
I must confess that I might be biased. I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I find that with an artist or a group that I like, I often find that life mirrors art (or art mirrors life) when it comes to their albums: a particular album might reflect what's going on in my world. This certainly happens with Pink! Whereas the musically varied, lyrically tortured Missundaztood perfectly fitted in with my angsty teenage years, Try This has a much more upbeat sound which went perfectly well with my first term at university, which is when I bought this album. It's as though Pink has worked through her issues and is out to have some fun (though the album has its darker moments too - as does anyone's time at uni!).
1. Trouble - The first track is a really catchy song, all about Pink going out and having a good time.
2. God is a DJ - A really upbeat track about getting out there and enjoying life... on the dancefloor.
3. Last to Know - A really angry song, great to put on when you're feeling a bit mad!
4. Tonight's the Night - This is a great song for listening to while getting ready for a night out, especially if you've had a hard day and just want to relax!
5. Oh My God - This is a really dirty song! I have to be careful about listening to this when my parents are in the house... it's a good song but can cause embarassment!
6. Catch me while I'm Sleeping - I don't normally like love songs but this is a really strong song with a great melody.
7. Waiting for Love - Another really strong song with a country music style guitar.
8. Save My Life - This is quite a sad song lyrically, which contrasts with the upbeat tune.
9. Try Too Hard - A funny song about people who try to be something they're not.
10. Humble Neighbourhood - Another song to get ready to!
11. Walk Away - This song is about walking away from a relationship when you realise it's over - a really positive song despite the subject matter.
12. Unwind - Another upbeat, catchy song.
13. Feel Good Time - Get The Party Started was Pink's 'dance' song on Missundaztood; Feel Good Time is the 'dance' song for Try This. It sounds very different to the other songs on the album. I like it but not as much as most of the album.
14. Love Song - This song is a bit soppy for me to be honest. I find myself skipping it every time I listen. My least favourite song on the album.
15. Hooker - A really funny bonus track, very bitchy but hilarious! Sing along with it imagining your worst enemy, if you're in a bad mood!
Try This is generally a much more consistent album than Missundaztood. The sound is predominantly rock, with a bit of jazz and country thrown in for good measure. All the songs on this album, except for Love Song IMO (and I know a lot of people disagree with me on that) are really strong, melodically, vocally and lyrically. It's as though after one RnB album and one really experimental album, Pink has found her style and isn't afraid to show it!
At a push, I would say that this is maybe my favourite Pink album. However, as I said, I am a bit biased, as every time I listen to it it brings back so many good memories!
