... instruments working their way into the mix as the band sadly leaves their slight folk roots almost entirely behind, salvaged only in the flute sections of 'Rusty Moon' and 'Nightfall,' the latter of which is the album's most inherently experimental offering and the appearance of classic prog saxophone, which would have sounded positively bizarre in any previous album. Amorphis' metal days are now firmly left in the past, with only Tomi Koivusaari's growl in 'Greed' showing any signs to newcomers that this band ma...more

Premium Review Tuonela - Amorphis: Sorrow Is My Bread, and Tears I Drink As Wine (441 words)
by - written on 15/01/08 (Very useful, 30 readings)
Rating:

Amorphis is a band that consistently surprises me, not only for its drastic changes of direction with every album, but the talent that comes with it. I expected to severely dislike 'Tuonela,' and while I'm admittedly not as fond of its keyboard-driven, atmospheric rock direction compared to the guitar-heavy 'Elegy' and the death metal of their older releases, it's suitably progressive for my tastes. Any metal fans lured by the promise of its title, the Finnish folkloric equivalent of hell, will be sorely disappointed by their most inoffensively pleasant album yet. Amorphis are from Finland and are apparentley quite well known over there. I don't know a lot of people that have heard of them, I myself only own this album by them, as I am trying to get hold of another of theirs that was reccommended to me (It was deleted and now is being re-issued!) But this is a great album to hear first and I am now eagerly awaiting the other one! The album hosts 10 tracks, all with pretty normal names. The style is quite laid back and relaxing. You'd probably listen to it while on the computer (or ahem...doing work) or something as not all the tracks are headbangable, but hey! give your neck a rest and check it out if you like ...  Read the complete review

Products similar to Tuonela - Amorphis

Loud, bad and dangerously addictive A band that appears to have disappeared

Very well chosen and appropriate, Excellent remastering, Very long and value for money at 80 minutes Some things not to my taste

Some decent power metal and reasonable ballads. Disappointing for Angra.

Seminal rock record Rock is all but gone

Classic power metal with plenty of time-out for instrumentals. Has an overly dated, eighties sound to it.
