      Very helpful

one of the best gothic doom albums in existence

Following on from the oppressive and claustrophobic mix of death and doom that was their 1992 debut full-length 'As The Flower Withers', Yorkshire gothic doom band My Dying Bride developed their formula in interesting new directions with their 1993 release 'Turn Loose The Swans', an album that consists of lethargic, moribund and drawn-out songs with a habit of dragging themselves along before crawling to a stop and the reluctantly returning to life once more.

Lamenting guitar riffs hit peaks before plunging back down to earth, accompanied my mournful strains of violin, occasional stark keyboards and funereal drums and interspersed with atmospheric, ambient sections and sudden, up-tempo sections of passages of murky death-metal blasting. Meanwhile, singer Aron Stainthorpe provides vocals that are a mix of dejected spoken word passages, miserable, wounded croons and venemous guttoral growls, with some excellent dramatic/romantic lyrics dealing with themes of abandoned faith, rejection, depression, hatred and all-consuming aggression.

Its an incredibly desolate and emotionally powerful listen with great songwriting and captivating performances all round, and even though it does in places sound slightly amateurish this only adds to its endearing sense of sincerity and honesty. The front cover, created by the vocalist, is excellent as well, appearing to show some blurry, abstract and imposing piece of gothic architecture seen as if viewed through a pane of glass in torrential rain. Generally seen by fans to be the greatest album of My Dying Bride's career, 'Turn Loose The Swans' is a magnificent album with great depth and passion and an essential listen for fans of gothic doom.
