Advantages: Lots of strong tracks

Disadvantages: A coupel of tunes let it down

Now known more for his work as an actor, Tyrese (Gibson) released his self-entitled debut in 1998. Before his work starring in "2 Fast 2 Furious", "Four Brothers" , and "Transformers" (amongst other things), Tyrese came up with this R&B album to show exactly how talented he is in this field.

1. "Nobody"

Although its likely that most will remember "Sweet Lady" as the stand-out single from this album, I personally foudn this to be the highlight of the recording. It was his second single, and had him come out with a complete killer cut with him on top of amazing production, and just working to the best of his ability to show that he wants no other than the girl he has, all with a club thing going on over it.

**Five Stars**

2. "Tell Me, Tell Me"

The way that this one has things composed is funky with lots of off-beat production to throw you off, but as it comes together, you are made to enjoy it as the change to the norm forces you into wanting it to work. You could criticise the fact that it lacks energy, but at this stage in the album, you only just getting a feel of things as this is his debut album.

**Four Stars**

3. "Promises"

I liked that this one chose to do something that you don't expect of it, as from the lyrics you would end to think that it is going to be a slow one. However he does an up-tempo Swing tune to motivate him to have power as he sings, and not sound pathetic with a lack of drive without a certain girl there in his life.

**Four Stars**

4. "Sweet Lady"

I am amazed that this one managed to make as big an impact that it did because it was just so far ahead of itself in reverting R&B to its more simple days when it could do what it was meant to do, and wasn't obliged to take on addition genres too when it did its thing. This soulful jam is a banger, and timeless. It could be released now and induce the same sort of impact on the game.

**Five Stars**

5. "Lately"

Not to be confused with the Stevie Wonder classic, this one has Tyrese singing a very emotional one about how he has been triggered to show more affection towads his girl. It is well done becuase you are made to believe each and every word that he says as he realisies that he has failed to do everything he possibly can to please his girl.

**Five Stars**

6. "Give Love a Try"

When I discovered that this had been released so long ago, I coulnd't believe it as it sounded so much more like modern R&B (or that of about 2000) than it did at the time, but the production in this one really places it exacly where it should be in R&B's diffenrent phases, and places it in to the age of Joe, Dru Hill and Jagged Edge as they all broke out to the mainstream. This is one of the best tracks on the album, and all fans of theis style will enjoy it.

**Five Stars**

7. "Ain't Nothin' Like a Jones"

Tyrese sings on his newly-found love, and the way it feels to him. He speaks on how he is adores the emotions associated with the early days of a new relationship. He knows what words will remind you of these times, and with all these thought-provoking lyrics, you are again able to connect with the song.

**Four Stars**

8. "You Get Yours"

Once aain you are found being dragged into the sounds of the album as you are captured by some engaging production which takes you back to the Golden Age of Soul and R&B. The throwback ways of the artist come through here too, and it makes it out to be one of the highlights of the album. The high lelvels of energy keep you guessing, and gives you an additional lift.

9. "Do You Need"

Beginning with a quick rap from Peter Gunz, this one has him getting into some more gentle stuff from him. I have to say that this one had very little going for it to make it special, and as a result you are sure to forget it. If it wasn't for the little Peter Gunz segment, it would seem to blend right in with the rest of the thing, and although it is a fair one, as a tune in its own right would have it flop.

**Three Stars**

10. "Taste My Love"

The way that this one begins forces you take tkae notice as you have a slowing, winding piece of production greeting you. Once tyrese actually comes onto it, he takes it to new places as he attempts to adapt to this piece of old school Soul composition and he apparently does well with it, and makes it fit in with what is popular at this time.

**Five Stars**

11. "I Can't Go On"

Sampling Zapp's "Computer Love", this is a slow and seductive one which really takes you into the full mood of things as you have him really getting emotional in the way that he delivers these desperate lyrics about him losing every bit of motivation in life without his girl being there in his life. It just keeps the high quality of things in effect.

**Four Stars**

12. "Stay In Touch"

This is a highly emotive recording from him, and it ends the album off in a big way. It has him perfomring a ballad, and although I often find it hard to get into this type of thing. I believe that the way he went about performing it managed to really pull me in as he comes with some powerful melodies to make you take notice. I found that the more I listened to it, the more I liked it.

**Five Stars**

Personally, I felt that this was the best of all his albums, and it had him come up with some of the best R&B tracks of the late nineties. There's a lot to like about this album, and only a few tunes seem a little weaker than the rest.

Summary: Tyrese's debut album
