Advantages: Well penned tracks, well sung

Disadvantages: Not a lot of original work

Recently I've been catching up on some "golden oldies", classic music from the 50s and 60s.. whilst my knowledge is pretty good on the music of the said years, I wasn't around then and therefore there is the occasional track or band which passes me by.

Somehow, I hadn't heard of Peter & Gordon and the name sounded a bit like a gay Lancastrian couple to me! The twosome aren't the most visually blessed, Peter Asher wearing thick rim glasses and the two sporting those cringeworthy barnets of the early to mid 60s. They let their voices do the talking as the duo manage to sing in a comfortable way which seems to combine power with melody resulting in a relaxing outcome similar to Simon & Garfunkel or indeed some of The Beatles ballads.

Their track World Without Love was extremely catchy and melodic and after reading up on it, I discovered it was in fact penned by Paul McCartney who dated Peter's sister Jane Asher, this goes for many more of the band's hits and their better songs on this album ( they are credited Lennon/McCartney although John Lennon had nothing to do with it in reality)

When you've got through the dizzy collection of catchy ditties that these guys originally released such as Woman, Lady Godiva, To Know You is to Love You and Nobody I Know, there's a range of well chosen cover songs - tracks originally done by other 60s greats - Little Richard, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and Ray Charles to name a few which aptly suit the duos voices and playing style.

The majority of tracks come in under 2 minutes and are well to the point but the lyrics are memorable!
