Advantages: great songs, feel good CD, all the songs from the film

Disadvantages: I can't find any!

Well I firstly want to say that my edition of Ultimate Dirty Dancing looks slightly different to the one displayed so it may have a few different things but it has the same title so I’m assuming the major points are the same.

The front of the inlay has a picture of Baby and Johnny atthe start of the dance that they carry out to The Time of My Life. The part of their face from this picture is blown up put to the angle so that you can see Baby's face. The smaller picture of them at the front is in colour and the bigger background picture is black and white. Ultimate Dirty Dancing is written in block gold writing which gives the whole CD that special, priceless feeling.

Well, where to begin, 1987, a great year. The birth of 2 legendary things took place this year. That would be ME and Dirty Dancing. The movie opened on the 21st of August. It made over $170 million worldwide and became a blockbuster in terms of its audience’s love for the material.

Dirty Dancing, musically, re wrote the record books in the music industry. It became a phenomenon all its own. The original soundtrack (which I have on record!) reached number 1 in the album charts, selling a million copies in its first 5 weeks. Then another album was released called More Dirty Dancing (which I also bought) was released and alongside the sales of the original soundtrack made sales exceed 20 million! A few of the hits released from the albums also stayed near or reached the top of the charts. It was also the first time that two albums released from the same film both reached the top of the charts.

One of the main reasons for the high love of this soundtrack is that it has all the music of the story's setting. The summer of 1963 and the great sounds of the 80’s.

The first song on the track is.....

1. Be My Baby- by The Ronettes.

This song is played with the opening credits. It has slow motion images of the young dancers doing what they do best, the dirty dancing. These are presented in black and white while the credits are displayed in hot pink. From just the opening credits you get a feel of what there is to come. This song is a great sing a long track and I can’t help but grab the hairbrush!

2. Big Girls Don’t Cry- by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.

This is the song that is played when we first meet the main character, baby. They are in the car on their way to the Kellermans resort. A commentary from Baby is being said and you get the first jist of the story. This is another great hairbrush track and a great song to get up and dance to.

3. Merengue- by Michael Lloyd and Le Disc.

This part of the film always cracks me up. Its the first time we meet Penny and she is trying to teach a group of holiday makers (including the Housemans) to merengue (hence the song). Baby just can’t seem to get to grips with the steps and at the end ends up dancing with an old woman instead of a man. This is the first in a sequence of instrumental tracks and I tend to skip through these as they reach the end. They are a bit repetitive but still a good listener.

4. Trot The Fox- by Michael Lloyd and Le Disc.

This is where we see the ugly mini Kellerman (as I like to call him) when he is dancing with Baby. They are talking about various things and she is wearing a disgusting cardigan lol. This is one of the instrumental tracks that I tend to skip through straight away. Again it is rather repetitive.

5. Johnny’s Mambo- by Michael Lloyd and Le Disc.

Phhhwwaarrrr! Cue Patrick Swazye! This when we first see Johnny and first see the dancing duo Penny and Johnny performing for the first time. They do a fantastic dance and I love the bit where she has a leg on his shoulder and he drags her along lol (if you’ve seen the film you’ll know what I mean). This is one of the instrumental tracks that I never skip. It is not as repetitive as the others and it has a better rhythm and beat to it so you can actually dance to it! Although the downside is, there are no lyrics, so no hairbrush.

6. The Time of My Life (Instrumental version)- by The John Morris Orchestra.

This always brings tears to my eyes; it is such a sweet little track. Little as it is very short. So short that it is only 40 seconds long lol. This is played a few times throughout the film but whenever I hear it I can see Baby with her little ugly cardigan on again trotting away down from the staff huts in the dark hopping over the stepping stones lol. I think this track would be so much better if it was longer. Once again, lack of hairbrush opportunity!

7. Where Are You Tonight- by Tom Johnston

This is where Baby is off to explore the main hall by herself at night and comes across the big Kellerman man (lol) talking to the other dancers and she then sees Johnny come in later. She then goes off in search for him at the staff quarters. She comes across his cousin carrying those famous watermelons lol. This is a great track to sing along to but it’s got quite a slow rhythm to it so it’s hard to have a good boogie. But I still manage anyway lol.

8. Do You Love Me- by The Contours

The first song that is played as she enters the room filled with those famous dirty dancers. Cue the famous line ‘I carried a watermelon?’ lol! Legendary! I can actually physically see Penny and Johnny dancing to this. They are in the same clothes that they wore when they did the dance to number 5. Baby’s feeling a little uncomfortable, but wouldn’t you if you witnessed that kind of dancing for the first time? This track is great to boogie to and I just can’t help but do just that! I dance to it if I’m sitting down! Lol!

9. Love Man- by Otis Redding

The song that Baby gets to dance with Johnny to for the first time. This is another funny moment, as she can’t quite get the hang of what to do at first lol. She only gets to dance with him for a short while and as she gets to the end of the song he turns her around and walks off, leaving her on her own like a lemon lol. This is a great song to turn the volume up to and dance to. I love this track! It reminds me of Patrick Swayze as wel. Mmmmmmmmm, Patrick! lol!

10. Stay- by Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs

This song is playing when Baby takes a trip to the dancers hang out for the second time. Wearing a more pleasing ensemble compared to the cardie lol. Now its a red and white stripy vest top with denim shorts. She has got money for Penny’s abortion, which she can not accept as she got it from her Dad. They then also decide Baby is going to take Penny’s place at the Sheldrake as that is the only day that Penny can have an appointment. This is a lovely track to have a slow dirty dance with someone to. Why can’t I find anyone who can dance like that? Lol!

11. Wipeout- by The Surfaris

Baby’s first try at the dancing with Johnny bless her. I can just see the part in my head when she’s coming down from his studio where they were practicing and she is trying to get the steps. She keeps going wrong and gets really frustrated lol. Bless her. This is a great song to dance to but I think it is very repetitive so I tend to skip through this one. But it is still a good listener.

12. Hungry Eyes- Eric Carmen

This song begins to play after Johnny has done the heartbeat trick on her. He has her hand on his heart to feel the beat and dance to it. How romantic! You also see her trying to get the steps right again lol. They are practicing the turns and she falls over and head buts him lol. They also try and get the bit where her arm is up resting on his shoulder and he has to caress it, but she is very ticklish and keeps laughing lol. She eventually gets it though. By the end of the song she has the steps down to a T, is wearing the dance shoes and a pink frilly skirt, awwwww! This has got to be one of my favourite tunes on this album. It is such a good sing a long song and it has the most gorgeous lyrics and you can’t help but smile to it.

13. Overload- by Zappacosta

Oh dear oh dear Johnny, you locked your keys in the car! Standing in the rain he kicks a post out of the ground and smashes the back window in and opens the door to let Baby in. They drive off and he goes kind of fast and she says ‘You’re wild!’ Pretty lame maybe but it makes him smile lol. I love this song to, I always play this loads of times when I’m getting ready to go out, it just hypes me up when it is played really loud and I love singing along to it. I used to think it sounded like Patrick Swayze singing this lol.

14. Hey Baby- by Bruce Channel

Now why would anyone want to dance on a log! Lol, Baby and Johnny are practising their dance steps on a log to help them get them right. They nearly fall off but not quite. She begins to learn a bit more about him now and sees what he's like. DJ Otzi killed this song when he released it the other year. The original is so great, a great dancer, a great sing a long, a great feel good tune.

15. De Todo Un Poco- by Michael Lloyd and Le Disc

The song that Baby and Johnny dance to at the Sheldrake. Her hair is too ott and her make up is awful! Lol, but she has a great time nonetheless. But tut tut, she doesn't do the lift lol. This song is a bit boring and repetative again and the only lyrics in the whole song is ‘de todo un poco’ surprise surprise lol! I usually skip through this but I just can’t help doing the dance to it lol.

16. Some Kind Of Wonderful- by The Drifters

The song that is playing in the car on their way back from the Sheldrake. Baby is getting changed in the back and Johnny keeps subtly looking in his mirror at her. Although he is not very secretive lol. She notices. She moves to sit in the front and they keep exchanging school kid glances. This is the first point that they realise they have feelings for each other. How can anyone say that they don’t like this song? It’s by the legendary Drifters. It is another feel good song that I love to sing along to. It is quite a slow song but it still has a good rhythm and it is possible to dance to.

17. These Arms Of Mine- by Otis Redding

Baby is now going to Johnny's room for the first time. He clears a seat for her and she sits down. She has just got into trouble with her dad as he has found out what her money paid for and he thinks Johnny was responsible. They are talking about being scared and she then tells him how she feels about him for the first time by saying how scared she feels of leaving that room and never feeling that way again the way she feels when she's with him. Definitely a great song for a slow dance. It is romantic and obviously slow, and a great titled song for a smooch.

18. Cry To Me- by Solomon Burke

OMG! Horniest song ever! Lol! I just have to hear this and I get in the mood! ‘Dance with me.’ ‘Here?’ Ooooooh! He thinks lol. Baby dirty dances with Johnny. He knows he shouldn’t but he can’t help himself. It is the sexiest dance to the sexiest song I have ever seen and heard. And what better way to finish off than sex! Lol, yes they have sex for the first time. It is a very sensual moment. Like I said this song is just so HOT and I can’t describe it any other way! Lol!

19. Will You Love Me Tomorrow- by The Shirelles
‘Have you had many women?’ Baby says as they are lying down together naked in his bed the following morning. He gets out after this question in aggravation but you get a great view of his ass! Coooor! Lol! They have bit of a ‘feelingful’ (its a Stephism lol) conversation before getting back into bed with her. It’s a slowish song but it has potential to dance to. But it is best as a sing a long song. Very romantic track also.

20. Love Is Strange- by Mickey and Sylvia

We all know what part of the film this is in lol. ‘Sylvia!’ ‘Yes Mickey’ ‘How do you call your lover boy?’ lol. They mouth the conversation part to each other while they are in his studio and they crawl along the floor to each other. It looks very sexy! This is a great sing a long track. Especially the conversation part lol I used to act this part out with my mate doing the crawling on the floor and everything lol. I think I’m going to do this at the next karaoke lol.

21. You Don’t Own Me- by The Blow Monkeys

This song is playing in Penny’s room when Johnny beats up Robbie. When they have finished he goes and hugs Baby and she then knows that they are ok again as Penny had told him to stop their relationship. He began to avoid Baby, but she now knows they are ok again. This quite a good song to listen to when you are p****d off with a boyfriend/girlfriend. It is quite slow and by now you are ready for another fast song to boogie to.

22. Yes- by Merry Clayton

What great timing! I was just saying I wanted a fast song and here it is! Great to sing to and great to dance to. Another one I like to play when I am getting ready to go out. It is playing when Lisa is going to have sex with Robbie, only to walk in on him having sex with someone else! Woops!

23. In The Still Of The Night- by The Five Satins

Baby and Johnny have just had sex again and this is the morning after song. They are lying next to each other talking about different things. She leaves his room and the old rich bag who fancies him comes out of someone else's room and sees Baby leaving Johnny. She gets slightly suspicious, well who wouldn’t! This is another slow song but you need it to calm down to after dancing so much to Yes. This would also make a great smooching song!

24. She’s Like The Wind- by Patrick Swayze

Cue the tears and tissues! Awwwww he’s leaving! And who knew Patrick could sing? Lol. This is a very moving moment in the film. The back window is still smashed in on his car and he is ready to leave. What pees me off about this scene is they only have a small kiss! You’re leaving! Snog her! Lol. I adore this song. When I feel upset I like to listen to this. Or after I’ve broke up with someone. Its good to get those tears flowing.

25. Kellerman’s Anthem- by The Emile Bergstein Chorale

Ok, how many others out there know all the words and actions to this song like me. Just me? Lol ok fair enough lol. This is the last song that is being sung by all the Kellermans, the staff and talent show contestants. Cue Johnny returning and the famous line, ‘Nobody puts baby in the corner.’ I like the way this song still cuts off exactly where it does in the film at the point where Johnny comes onto the stage.

26. (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life- by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes

As soon as you mention the name Dirty Dancing to anyone, they will immediately think of this song. It is the theme tune for the film. The best of the whole album I think. Baby and Johnny do their dance again and she does the lift, yay! They look so great together! All the other dancers dance down the gangway behind Johnny and he waits in the middle while the other dancers lift Baby off the stage and she runs and does the lift! Everyone is then dancing in the hall. Baby's dad finds out that Robbie got Penny in trouble and that it wasn’t Johnny so he apologises to him. Everybody is then dancing in the entire building and it is a happy ending. I always get jealous watching this bit because I want to be Baby lol, the lucky cow! This song, as I’m sure you will all agree, is a great sing a long song and you just can’t resist but get up and dance to it. What a great track to finish on.

As I have mentioned, I am not sure if my CD is different to other peoples. On this CD all the tracks are listed in the order they appear in the film, as I’m sure you have realised so it is a great way to relive the memories of the great film.

This CD contains all the songs from the original soundtrack and the second album More Dirty Dancing. So basically it is every song from the film, put onto one CD, for the first time!

Dirty Dancing has been my favourite film for as long as I can remember and it will continue to be for many years to come.

Keep on dirty dancing!

Thanks for reading

I agree with alkaliguru's comment below and I'd add that whilst I'm not against track-by-track reviews in cases such as this perhaps more of an overview would have been better because as it reads at the moment the usefulness of the review is lost somewhat by all the extra, and rather unnecessary, padding about the film.
