Advantages: Some marvellous songs, what a musician
Disadvantages: I can't really point out many faults here.....
This album is the truly amazing follow up to Little Earthquakes. I bought it in 1997, after several years of being a Tori hater. It blew me away the first time I heard it, and every time I listen to it now, there is still something else which stands out to me. There are several very good tracks on the album, but the ones that stand out to me are 'Cornflake Girl', which was released as a single, 'Icicle', and 'Cloud on my Tongue'. This woman can play the piano very well, and the sounds she gets from it through the album are wonderful. Some may find Tori a little depressing, but I find several songs on this album are very uplifting. The album starts with 'Pretty Good Year', which contains some wonderful melodies, and this moves into the catchy 'God'. Next is 'Bells for Her', which is played on an upright piano (You can actually hear the pedals of the piano moving as Tori tries to get the best sound from it!). 'Past the Mission', another single from the album, is a cracking tune. 'Baker Baker' is a more mellow song, which sounds just a little depressing, but this is followed by the upbeat 'Wrong Band'. Then 'The Waitress', which has a very loud chorus which absolutely rocks! The single 'Cornflake Girl' is amazing, with its distincitve guitar and a bit of whistling. This track is the one most non-Tori fans will recognise. The melodies in 'Icicle' and 'Cloud on my Tongue' are just wonderful. These two quite, calm, piano songs are then followed by 'Spacedog', another upbeat song with a rock feel to it, guitars and drums. 'Yes Anastasia' rounds off the album perfectly with a more calming effect. All in all a topsy turvey tumble of emotions! Her lyrics are sometimes not easy to work out, but are very good when you do fathom them out! I would definitely recommend this to anyone I know, give it a little time however, a
s not everyone likes Tori straight away...even me! Compared to her other albums, this is definitely one of the best!
