      Very helpful

One of the best dm albums ever written

US technical death metal band Immolation's fifth full length album 'Unholy Cult' (released 2002) is a more doomier affair than its predecessors. It still retains the band's trademark plunging riffs, unrestrained jazzy solos and thundering drums, but the songs are somehow more epic, and incredibly dynamic and fluid, going from furious blasting one moment to low, dragging riffs the next. The song 'Reluctant Messiah' twists and turns brilliantly, captivating the listener, whilst title track 'Unholy Cult' has an amazing eclectic bridge that gains momentum and sits brilliantly against the sludgy death metal parts that sit either side of it.

Ross Dolan's vocals are powerful yet intelligable as ever, whilst the lyrics remain intelligent and passionate, attacking christianity as a oppressive psychological weapon used to bind society through fear (look up the lyrics to 'Reluctant Messiah' as they are particularly good), and the artwork is great too, coming across as a cross between Zdislaw Beksinski and H R Geinger in its portrayal of a ossified chuch casting a malevolent cross-shaped shadow onto a barren wasteland whilst piles of ethereal, emiaciated corpses fill the foreground.

A hugely intelligent and massively gratifying death metal album -a classic!
