Advantages: Fantastic mix of Metalcore and Post-Hardcore.
Disadvantages: May be a little too heavy for some.
Hondo Maclean were a Post-Hardcore band from Bridgend in South Wales. During their career they released an album and two EPs before deciding to call it a day in early 2007. They were active as a band for six years and were extremely proficient at what they did, melding Post-Hardcore and Metal and emerging victorious. They were signed to Mighty Atom Records and all of their releases came out through the label. A second album had been planned, however it was about this time that the band split up and so it never did emerge in the end.
The thing I always loved most about Hondo Maclean was their fantastic ability to shift from melodic to mayhem with ease. One second they'll be singing at their most melodic and the next they will erupt with an explosive Metal riff. This makes their music great fun to listen to as you never know where the music is going to go next and this therefore provides for great entertainment and tremendous excitement. Closing track 'Mortal Kombat' I feel provides the album with the best example of this, it is in my opinion the best track that the band ever wrote and is one that I thoroughly enjoy listening to. There are not many bands of this sort that I can appreciate in quite such a way as this, however Hondo Maclean are definitely one of them and never do they disappoint. The way they combine the melodic elements of their music with the heaviest and most ferocious attack of Metal has to be heard to be believed, it always works incredibly well and always comes across excellently.
Hondo Maclean may now have split up, but their 'Unspoken Dialect' album is definitely well worth listening to. It only contains ten tracks, however each and every one of them are greatly impressive and tremendous fun to listen to. Not everyone will appreciate this music as it may well be a little too heavy for some, but those that do enjoy music of this sort should be greatly satisfied with what they hear from the 'Unspoken Dialect' album. Hondo Maclean are a band that I still have a great appreciation of, and although I was greatly upset when the band decided to call it a day; at least there is still this hugely impressive album to listen to and remember them by. What better way to remember a great UK band than to listen to their one and only, undeniably excellent album.
Label: Mighty Atom
Release Date: 28th February 2005
Summary: The only album Hondo Maclean ever released is definitely well worth listening to.
