From Every Sphere - Ed Harcourt

Rating:
Ed released Here Be Monsters, and this Album was very different and did tread where other artists would not have the minerals. Its as if he stuck his fingers up at the pop industry and told them he was doing it his way. Ed then proceeded to release his second album From Every Sphere. The music is somewhat different yet does deserve a genre and i would have to place it in the same area as the current popular singer Norah Jones. Its is quite simply Ed's Lyrics being sang to melodic tunes, you can tell from listening that the he likes a steady beat from the drums, the drum sound is very crisp, not to mention the piano, which seems to just play unscrupulously. What I heard when I had finally realised how to work the volume control to prevent further eardrum damage was 'Something in My Eye', the first track on Ed Harcourt's new album, 'Here Be Monsters'. I was instantly, in my crude cross-referencing, musical-minded, 'do you like my signed Van Halen t-shirt' sort of, who does this sound like way, making comparisons across the board. We have, here, Jeff Buckley shaking hands with Ben Folds, who is doing a leap-frog over each member of the Divine Comedy, whilst listening to a Nick Drake cassette with Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue' taped on the reverse side. hang on the likes of Radiohead, for example. Which is a shame, because anyone willing to give 'Here Be Monsters' will be rewarded with a chilling yet magical experience. Ed Harcourt is a part of a rare breed these days - a genuinely exciting singer/songwriter with only his best years to come. A recent Mercury Music Prize nomination has confirmed what many already understand full well - Harcourt's heartfelt tales of woe are making people sit up and listen. I suggest you do the same. ...
