Advantages: 'One Little Victory' is that good!

Disadvantages: Not as spontaneous as the band may have desired.

What can happen in 6 years? Degrees are earned; hearts won, and marriages resolved and divorces decreed; prison sentences served, pardoned and reconvened; and, all other matters of life and death that happen in a lifetime. If such is the call of true life then it can be no surprise that eventually Life happens to even the best of us all, good and bad. Suffice it to say, losing dear loved ones is not an easy thing to overcome, yet Neil Peart and his trusted best friends, Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson did just that. 'One Little Victory' possibly sums their discourse to overcome in words, but give the players a good listen and YOU would agree - the band were back to regain glories past! Sadly, the rest of the CD struggles through various degrees of emotion, some of which had been told before, and some of which were new to 'Rush' listeners. Still can cuts like 'Earthshine', 'Secret Touch' or 'Ghost Rider' measure up to past winners like 'Distant Early Warning', 'Big Money' or even 'New World Man'? The alchemy is here in experimental pieces like 'Freeze (Part IV of 'Fear')' and 'How It Is', but there still seems to be something missing. Possibly the album simply lacks cohesiveness, and the songs could have been out-takes from past sessions not newly penned numbers coming off a long hiatus. Perhaps they need to be heard live to win our affections. In any case, this was the first 'Rush' LP that took many listens for me to appreciate. I think what was missing was the free-style, 'happy-go-luckiness' of the follow-up, 'Feedback'. Still, it's 'Rush', so it's good! GetItWhileUStillCan.
