... drags out a little with the instruments finishing it off. 'Passion's Killing Floor' and 'The Kiss of Dawn' come next, both with memorable choruses. I find the lyrics are more compelling with these two, and are worth a listen. 'The Kiss of Dawn' has a feel similar to many on their 'Dark Light' album, and has a slower tempo. The next track is my favourite of the album. At a whopping 10 minutes long, you would probably think that it would get boring and drag, but this is not the case. It reminds me of a couple of songs fro...more

Premium Review Venus Doom: Special Edition - HIM: H.I.M. continue to be amazing! (642 words)

Just a note, this review is on the standard edition of the album, as the special edition is the only one listed on here. This song is a fairly far cry from the band's previous album, 'Dark Light'. While 'Dark Light' is distinctly melodic and enchanting, this album shows H.I.M.'s (His Infernal Majesty) heavier, darker side. The first track is the title song, and immediately goes into heavy drums and guitars, which I would say does a good job of setting the scene for the rest of the album. This song shows off the band's talented drum and guitar skills. However, Ville Valo doesn't show off his usually great vocals, although he goes to a very deep tone ...  Read the complete review

Following on so briskly from the excellent and enchanting Dark Light, I was always a little suspicious about Venus Doom and my first listen has done little to ease my fears. After the first spin one can quickly ascertain that HIM have chosen a much heavier direction which I don't think suits them particularly well, and save for a few nice touches the album is distinctly lacking in both variation and ideas too. Some classic tracks, funny at times, definitely a cult favourite A couple of weaker tracks but not many

There isn't a weak song on the album. The UK version doesn't have some of the european versions tracks.

Timeless, classic songs Not around anymore

None Generally weak

Some of the band HIM's best ever work and a good bonus DVD included There are some boring moments to behold

classic too many fillers for a greatest hits albumremixes

Illusions - Crematory
Accomplished mix of gothic styles. Moves away from death metal.

The Enchanted Hill - Album Leaf, The
More pleasant post-rock soundscapes. Becomes fairly dull and repetitive, and lacks in emotion.

Last Command - W.A.S.P.

Atlantis - Atlantis
Strong symphonic presence through keyboards, and some nice lead guitars. Feels cluttered and in need of a darn good editing.

90 pur sang - Apocalypse

Strength Through Torture - Armagedda
Good old traditional black metal, in slow and fast versions. Only two songs, and nothing spectacular happens.

Hard Hammer Hits - Batmobile
Um, even more consistent and level-headed. Lacks some of the band's usual character.

For Opeth fans... ...but it's Opeth Lite.

Continuing to experiment with melody in the death metal genre. Four sub-standard songs.
