The Very Best Of Bay City Rollers - Bay City Rollers
Date: 22/10/09

Advantages: Honest pop music
Disadvantages: Don't expect big production, it was the 1970s after all.
If you had a big sister in the 1970s, or you were that big sister in the 1970s, you should be familiar with most of the tracks on this album.
Just a recap. The Bay City Rollers were one of Britain's better exports in the 1970s - car manufacturing was going downhill, so we needed something to export, right?
I am more familiar with the tracks on this album through the two albums; Rollin' and Once Upon a Star, which I was bombarded with as a kid.
Listening to this compilation fills me with not only nostalgia, but a recognition that this was good old honest pop music. Despite my tastes being more oriented towards rockier music I DO like and appreciate pop music, even sugar coated mush, as long as it is well produced.
As you can imagine, being a band for girls, the output of the 'Rollers has a tendency to be slushy and a bit lovey-dovey such as Bye-Bye Baby, Give A Little Love, Summerlove Sensation and Please Stay. Please Stay, mind you would bring a tear to, not only a glass eye, but a hardened criminal.
But guys. Guess what, there is something for us here too!
You can't deny that Shang-A-Lang is anthemic, and us guys like a good anthemic shout-a-long.
Keep On Dancing is not a bad tune for us guys who like something to have a bit of a groovy jig to when no-one's watching (did I really just admit that??).
Then what about a bit of "Saturday Night" which starts out with the guys calling out S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y NIGHT. It could almost be a chant at a football match. I am sure I also heard somewhere that this is one of Clem Burke's favourite songs (he who played drums for Blondie).
Another two the guys might like are Money Honey and Give it to Me Now.
Money Honey is rocky and sounds manly, though don't expect AC/DC or Black Sabbath, that it is far removed from. Give It To Me Now, is slow and sexy and sensual but not in a slushy girly way, more in a straightforward guy way.
Well guys, will you spend money on this? No? Well you could always buy it for a forty-something female friend and sneak a listen.
I won't say a word ;)
Summary: Straightforward pop music from when it mattered.
