Located within the heart of East London is an establishment famous for attracting the hottest producers, designers, musicians, photographers and artists from across the London region. This institution, better known as the 'Old Truman Brewery', was a project envisaged and directed by Vibe Promotions. The history of the Vibe team goes back to the 80's, in the heyday of acid house, where the young entrepreneurs plotted warehouse parties in the major cities within the UK. The philosophy of the Vibe team has been to amalgamate all areas of music, dance, art and design to create the ultimate in entertainment. As ambitious and talented business people, the Vibe team had itchy feet, a new challenge was on the horizon, the question was what? It was in '94 that the aspect of resurging The Old Truman Brewery came into play. The aim was to create a flagship for cultural entrepreneurs and creative individuals. The government recognised the inner area of Tower Hamlets as an area consisting of problems in housing, education and employment. What was to come from the revamp of this derelict brewery would not only reform the inner area around the building 'Brick Lane' but it encouraged a whole new lifestyle to come and settle, bringing excitement and a new lease of life to what once was a depressed area. The change was magnetic, it drew in an influx of a new generation of inspiring music makers and artists from all angles of the creative world. Tenants included Mercury award winning Talvin Singh, the superb choreographer Lynne Page and the author/director/manager Ray Shell. The 'OTB' set new limits; it was one of the first places to produce a record from start to finish. The brewery occupied musicians, vocalists, producers, dub plate pressing plants and record labels, all components needed to produce a tangible track. The life source of the brewery pins down to the centerpiece known as the Vibe Bar. The concept was to c
reate an international centre by merging all collectives of the creative industry. The three-phase strategy took 5 years to achieve, during this time it was key in raising the areas profile. It was one of the only places in London providing free Internet access. Through the years the bar has become renowned commercially, yet it still keeps its credible image. Its ethos of experimental music ranging from reggae to dance is a vital component in maintaining the bars success. The bar has hosted many key players in the past few years including Madonna, Bjork, Liam Gallagher, Pete Townsend and Paul Oakenfold. Major brands have used the location to hold significant events ranging from the Planet 24 party to the Guardian Newspaper party plus the Working title party with Joseph Fiennes and Natalie Imbruglia. The sight has encouraged many music directors to use the location to film pop videos, including: Alicia Keys, All Saints and Kula Shaker. Most recently the 'OTB' was host to the critically acclaimed Bodyworlds Exhibition. This summer the Vibe team released the 'Sound of Brick Lane Volume 1'. The unmixed compilation consists of many unreleased & limited edition tracks which seem carefully selected to only include DJs and producers who have played at the Vibe Bar over the last 5 years. It reflects the music policy that has provided the bar with its unique reputation. This timeless collection features sounds from Defected, Atlantic Jaxx, Tummy Touch and many more cutting edge labels. It journeys into a retrospective of dance, funk, leftfield, tech-garage, electro and Balearic. Whatever your taste is, this compilation is guaranteed to suit any mood. The Vibe team are planning ventures in Brighton and New York - worth looking out for I imagine ...
